IN what should come as a surprise to no one, it wasn’t the physics department that led to Rob Gronkowski attending the University of Arizona.
As proud pop Gordy Gronkowski describes in a Vanity Fair interview with Bruce Weber — who photographed the Patriots tight end for DuJour magazine earlier this year — only one factor had crossed his son’s mind.
“Rob had something like 65 scholarship offers, and I asked, ‘Where are you going? Syracuse? Ohio State?’ He goes, ‘University of Arizona.’ I asked, ‘Why there?’ ‘Dad, if you ever went to a pool party at Arizona, you’d understand.’”
The video above is from one of Gronkowski’s returns to Tucson, making it not hard to imagine what his campus life was like.
When Gronk was joined at the U of A by brother Chris, who had transferred from Maryland, the duo shacked up with older brother Gordie Jr., who was playing minor league baseball at the time. The trifecta of Gronks ultimately turned their bachelor pad into “Club G,” which was home to slip-and-slide soirees with co-eds, as the Super Bowl champ explains in his memoir, “It’s Good to Be Gronk”.
“So what Gord would do to get the party started was create a hundred-foot-long slip-and-slide,” he wrote.
“We would invite all the hot athletic and sorority girls over, then take dishwashing liquid and squirt it all over the floor to make it slippery.
“We would then squirt it all over ourselves to get lubed up and then throw water all over the place.“
Though Club G didn’t have a pool in its back yard per se, Rob and company made do with a hot tub.
Four years after he was drafted to the NFL in 2010, Gronk found a friend who fancied the ladies — and pool parties — as much as he does.
Gronkowski senior also revealed how his sons became the athletic beasts they are.
It began when eldest son Gordie first discovered the gym.
“In eighth grade, I said to each of [my sons] in turn, ‘If you want to keep pursuing sports, you need to start training,’” he said.
“Gordie didn’t want to at first. But then he saw his younger brother Danny down in the basement getting bigger, stronger, and faster than him — then he wanted to train.
“It was like a virus after that — Chris hopped in, then Rob. After that, it was no problem pushing them to work harder anymore.
“They did it themselves. That was a great feeling, but it got very competitive in the house. I just created the environment, sat back, and watched it happen.”
You have to love the Gronk.
