Maria Folau has been crowned the Adelaide Thunderbirds’ club champion at its awards night in the city on Tuesday.
The New Zealand 32-year-old was judged as the player who had led by example, performed under pressure and at a consistently high level throughout the Super Netball season for the T-Birds who finished seventh on the ladder.
“Maria is an exemplary winner who was regularly instrumental in the Adelaide Thunderbirds on court performance and has the ability to provide momentum shifts and significant on court experience,” Adelaide coach Tania Obst said.

“Maria has shown all the qualities of what is required to play consistently well at this level, she has embraced the club’s environment and has showcased her world class skills week in, week out.
“2019 has been a successful year for the Adelaide Thunderbirds. While we were disappointed to finish the season in seventh place, the over-riding goal I wanted to get out of the season was for the (team) to be competitive again and I think we have been able to do that.”
In other awards, Layla Guscoth won the players’ award, Shamera Sterling the members’ Award and the Tanya Denver Award, while Hannah Petty was presented with the spirit award.
