Outpouring of grief for footy king Neil Kerley

Police have revealed the cause of South Australian football legend Neil Kerley’s death, with the SANFL premiership coach taken off the official road toll.

SA Police said investigations had determined the 88-year-old died after suffering a medical episode while towing a trailer on Mallee Rd at Walker Flat on June 29.

Kerley, born Donald Neil Kerley, played 265 games in the SANFL as a ruck/utility and coached 628 games.

“The epitome of South Australian football”, Kerley’s life will be celebrated at a state funeral at Adelaide Oval on Monday, July 25 at 1pm.

“This event will be a celebration of the life of Neil Kerley, celebrated as “Mr Football”, and will be an opportunity to hear from family, friends and celebrate what the man brought to South Australia, to our community and particularly, to our great sport of Aussie rules.” Acting Premier Susan Close said last week.

Shortly after his death, Mrs Kerley said she was humbled by Premier Peter Malinauskas’ offer for a state funeral in her husband’s honour.

“I think after the funeral is when it will hit me, I’ve been going off adrenaline for the last few days I think,” she said at the time.

“You can’t forget him quick … we’ll just be talking about him as if he’s still here.

“He would’ve said: ‘Had a bloody good innings.”

Kerley, nicknamed Knuckles, King and Kerls, made 32 appearances for South Australia – including six times as captain, and finished his career as an Australian Football Hall of Fame member and South Australian Football Hall of Famer.

Kerley’s playing career spanned 17 years while his time as a coach went on for decades.
