Lando Norris has crashed out of the Canadian Grand Prix after coming unstuck in a tense battle with Oscar Piastri, allowing the Australian to extend his championship lead.
George Russell started from pole position and made the most of being out in front, claiming his first victory of the season ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antontelli.

The Mercedes rookie jumped Piastri at the start to move into third place, and despite plenty of pit stops and tyre strategies, the top three didn’t change from there.
But drama exploded in the final laps when Piastri was charging down Antonelli and Norris was hot on his teammate’s tail.
Norris overtook Piastri down the inside of a corner, only for the Aussie to respond by drawing alongside Norris in a blistering duel down the back straight.

Piastri then went down the inside of the chicane under braking to stay in front in fourth position, but the battle wasn’t over.
Norris had DRS again going up the pit straight and moved up on the inside of Piastri — a gap that was too narrow.
Norris ran out of room and crashed into Piastri and the pit wall, losing his front wing and retiring from the race.
Sky Sports commentator David Croft exclaimed: “The front wing is gone Lando Norris is out of this race!
“He said inevitably, the two McLarens would come together at some point, and that point has arrived now.
“McLaren letting their drivers race, which is the fairest way to do it. He (Norris) thought the gap was there, there definitely wasn’t a gap. It hasn’t cost them a victory but it has cost precious championship points.”
2016 world champion Nico Rosberg said: “Lando did an amazing first lunge but it’s just very strange, the mistake he made. It’s just one more mistake of the many, and it’s a big mistake.
“It becomes a little bit traumatic at some point, because you keep spiralling, ‘I’m making mistakes, I’m not good enough’, it gets to you. It can get pretty dark.”
The incident between Norris and Piastri drew comparisons to a similar crash between another pair of McLaren teammates, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix.
Button swerved into Hamilton in the exact same part of the track in Montreal as Hamilton crashed out of the race.
He went on to leave McLaren in 2013 for Mercedes, where he won six world championships.
Norris apologises, Piastri speaks after crash
Norris took responsibility for the incident, telling team radio: “I’m sorry, it’s all my bad. All my fault. Unlucky, sorry, stupid from me.”
The Brit added post-race: “No one to blame but myself, I apologise for the whole team and to Oscar as well for attempting something probably a bit too silly.
“Glad I didn’t ruin his race, apologies to the team. Silly from my part.
“Our number one (right) is to not make contact with my teammate, and that’s what I did.
“McLaren is my family, I race for them. Every single weekend, I try and do well for them, more than I often try and do well for myself.
“So when I let them down like this, and when I make a fool of myself in a moment like today, yeah, I have a lot of regret in something like that.
“I’m not proud of that, and I feel bad and I feel like I let down my team. And that’s always the worst feeling. Of course, I only really need to apologise to all of them and Oscar as well.”
Piastri was philosophical as always and said he doesn’t expect the incident to change the dynamic in the team garage, with McLaren letting their two drivers race.
“Obviously it’s not ideal for anyone but I haven’t actually seen the incident, so I don’t know what exactly happened,” Piastri said.
“But if Lando has taken full responsibility then that’s how it goes I guess. Just a bit of a tricky race in general and not an ideal finish.”
Asked if the battle with Norris had been fair, Piastri said: “I thought it was. He made quite a large move into Turn 10, held my own into the chicane, and it was definitely a tough battle but a clean one up until that point.
“Again, I’ve not seen the incident, but I don’t think there were any bad intentions involved, I think it was just unfortunate really. I’ll go and have a look obviously but we’re both fighting for a world championship and am very thankful to the team that they allow us to race.
“I don’t expect this to change anything in terms of that. We’ll keep going racing through the year.”
McLaren drivers scolded by team boss
F1 fans had wanted to see the McLaren teammates in an all-out battle this season and it took until the 10th race of the year for on-track carnage to eventuate.
The crash happened right below the McLaren pit wall, where team principal Andrea Stella’s reaction said it all.
Croft said in commentary: “Andrea Stella would have felt that physically and emotionally as well.”
Stella was scathing in his comments to Sky Sports after the race.
“We never want to see a McLaren involved in an accident and definitely we never want to see the two McLarens touching each other,” Stella said.

Yikes.
“It’s something we definitely need to review because this is a very clear principle. At the same time it’s a contact that happened because of a misjudgement Just Lando misjudged the distance to the car ahead and therefore there was no malintent.
“Lando owned immediately, took responsibility for that, but certainly something to discuss and review. Our principles are already in place, our drivers will have something to learn further and we go racing again.
“It is absolutely a misjudgement that cost Lando quite a lot in the championship. It already cost for the team so definitely an incident that should have not happened.”
Norris’ DNF and Piastri’s fourth placed finish means the Australian has extended his lead in the drivers’ championship to 22 points.
