Channel 10’s epic Daniel Ricciardo blunder in promo for Australian Grand Prix

Channel 10’s promotion of this year’s Australian GP in Melbourne has got off to a rocky start due to one glaring mistake.

Channel 10's Daniel Ricciardo ad blunder

Channel 10’s coverage of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix is off to a rocky start after promotional material advertising the event declared it would be the first time two Aussies went head-to-head at the event.

Network Ten holds the broadcast rights for the race Down Under and has been promoting the Grand Prix on social media and on TV in recent days.

The network’s advertisement for the race, which you can watch in the video player above, centres around the two homegrown heroes set to do battle on March 24 in Daniel Ricciardo and Oscar Piastri.

“For the first time, two Aussies go head to head at an Australian Grand Prix,” the voiceover states.

Unfortunately for the broadcaster, they’ve overlooked some Formula 1 history relating to 34-year-old Ricciardo.

Ricciardo’s first appearance at an Australian Grand Prix took place in 2012 when he lined up alongside fellow Aussie Mark Webber.

Webber got the better of Ricciardo on the day as he crossed the line fourth with Ricciardo finishing ninth.

They were both still on the grid for the 2013 race.

News.com.au reached out to Channel 10 regarding the error in the advertisement on Monday morning.

Just minutes later the promotional material was deleted off social media.

News.com.au is yet to receive comment from Channel 10.

While the advertisement carried the mistake, the wording on the network’s website does however state “for the first time since 2013 there will be two Australians on the grid”.

Webber may have taken the chocolates behind the wheel of the Red Bull over his fellow Aussie during the 2012 Grand Prix, but it was Ricciardo who stole the limelight.

Driving with the Scuderia Toro Rosso team, Ricciardo stunned in his first outing around Albert Park.

The then 22-year-old Ricciardo started the race from tenth on the grid before claiming two points with a ninth placed finish.

The 2013 Australian Grand Prix didn’t go according to plan for Ricciardo who was forced to retire after suffering a broken exhaust.

Webber crossed the line in sixth place in what was his final F1 outing at Albert Park.

Webber’s Formula 1 career came to an end following the 2013 season, but he’s still around the paddock as the manager of rising Australian star Piastri.

Piastri blew the F1 world away during his rookie season with McLaren that peaked when he won the Qatar Sprint race.

He ended up finishing the 2023 season with 97 points which placed him ninth on the drivers standings.

Through two races this season the 22-year-old has finished eighth in Bahrain before crossing the line fourth in Saudi Arabia.

He’s currently sitting fifth on the drivers standings with 16 points, one point ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and marginally behind Mercedes’ George Russell.

Ricciardo has endured a tough start to the 2024 season with a horror showing during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The Australian limped into the pits in 16th spot, a long way behind former teammate Max Verstappen.

Ricciardo was never a factor in the race after a poor qualifying session on Saturday where he was eliminated in Q1.

Things went from bad to worse during the race with an embarrassing moment on Lap 49 of 50 when he bizarrely spun out at a chicane.

The sight of Ricciardo losing control left Sky Sports commentators Simon Lazenby and Karun Chandhok in disbelief and both said the 34-year-old must have been tagged from behind.

Except replays showed Ricciardo simply slid across the kerb without any explanation.

It was another blow in Ricciardo’s hopes of being promoted to the senior Red Bull team in 2025.

“It’s very odd,” Chandhok said.

“You have to say, in that fight for the Red Bull seat. Perez has done a very good job. Seven and a half seconds behind Max is a very, very solid performance and that’s exactly what they want. They want him to be ahead of everyone else and to just be there if Max has an issue.”

Lazenby said: “It’s been a frustrating night for Danny Ricciardo. He hasn’t been able to make an impression.

“Lost places at the start and hasn’t really made an impression on this race.”

The Australian Grand Prix will take place on March 24 with lights set to go out at 3pm (AEDT).
