Supercars star Chaz Mostert has turned his back on rival teams to recommit to Walkinshaw Andretti United in a “no-brainer” decision as he continues his quest for a maiden V8 crown.

One of the hottest signatures on pit lane this year, Mostert has re-signed with WAU on a multi-year deal while one of the most coveted seats on the grid for 2022 at the powerful Triple Eight squad is up for grabs.

Mostert was considered among the contenders to replace seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup, who will retire from full-time racing at the end of the year to move into a management role with the team.

But Mostert said he had seen enough in a year and a half with the team to know his future lay with WAU.

“It’s awesome news for myself and for the team,” Mostert said.

“It was exciting in the first place to start a new adventure with Walkinshaw a little bit over a year ago.

“It’s fantastic what I’ve seen so far with the team the way (team owners) Ryan (Walkinshaw), Zak (Brown) and Michael (Andretti) have come together and the direction for the team in the future is something that I want to be involved in.

“For me, this is definitely the best decision to stay with Walkinshaw and restore the faith for what they have been able to do for me and look forward to continuing to build the team in the future and hopefully chase that championship one day.”

Mostert finished an equal career-high fifth in the Supercars championship in his first season at WAU last year and sits third in this year’s championship standings behind the Triple Eight pair of Shane van Gisbergen and Whincup.

The 2014 Bathurst 1000 champion would not reveal if he had fielded calls from Triple Eight but was excited to get his new deal with WAU sealed midway through the season.

“I don’t want to go too much into what else is happening,” Mostert said.

“But getting this deal done nice and early shows the belief in the team that I’m with and also the team believes in me to sign a deal and get a deal done so early in the year.

“It was pretty much a no-brainer to stay with the team with what we’ve been able to achieve in such a small time from when we first got together.”

Mostert broke a two-year drought to claim his first race win with the WAU squad in April at Symmons Plains but conceded van Gisbergen was going to take some beating in this year’s championship, which heads to Darwin this weekend.

“Shane has had an unbelievable start to the championship this year, it’s hard to try and beat someone when they win races in a row,” Mostert said.

“We just need to make sure we’re there fighting for race wins and that is the goal and we’ll see what happens towards the later part of the year.

“But we definitely need to keep trying to get on that top step … there is still room for us to improve on and make sure we’re there week in and week out.
