Red Bull pilot takes on world’s fastest cars in Adelaide drag race
HOW quickly can a Red Bull plane accelerate over 400m — will it be a match for some of the world’s most impressive cars? We’ll know at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
WHAT’S quicker over 400m on the ground: a plane, a Porsche 911, a Brabham BT62 or a Leyton House March Formula One car?
The crowd at this year’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival will find out when Australia’s only Red Bull Air Race pilot, Matt Hall, takes on the three supercars in a drag race dubbed “Winged Warriors”.
The obvious difference between the wings is that those on the cars are designed to keep them on the ground.
The cars will be piloted by some of the best: seven-time Bathurst winner Jim Richards will drive the GT2 RS Porsche, Brabham the car that bears the family name and Italian F1 star Ivan Capelli will be in the car he raced around Adelaide’s streets in 1989.
The plane, which has helped Hall to twice finish second in the Red Bull Air Race World Championships, is highly competitive when it comes to its weight.
It weighs in at 700kg and lighter than both the Porsche (1470kg) and the Brabham BT62 (972kg). Capelli’s car is the lightest at a touch over 500kg.
Hall will also perform two aerobatic displays over the weekend of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, which runs from November 28-December 2.
The drag race between the winged warriors will take place on Sunday, December 2.
