New helmet, same result as Marc Marquez tops Day 2 of MotoGP's post-season test at Valencia
New helmet, same result for new MotoGP champ Marc Marquez, topping the second day of post-season testing at Valencia.
NEW world champion Marc Marquez resumed pride of place at the top of the MotoGP timesheets as Honda dominated the order on day two of post-season testing in Spain.
The 20-year-old, who wrapped up the title with a third-place finish in Sunday's Valencia MotoGP, headed the times for almost the entire seven-hours of running.
He logged almost 80 laps across the day, setting the benchmark at 1m30.536s late in the day.
It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Honda rider, though, surviving a massive near-crash at turn six, reportedly saving himself with his left elbow and knee.
Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo was second, two-tenths down on Marquez, while the new champion's Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa was third, the satellite Hondas of Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista filling the top five.
Nine-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi was down in seventh, 0.878s off Marquez's pace, as he comes to grips with new crew chief Silvano Galbusera, after Rossi and legendary Australian MotoGP mechanic Jeremy Burgess announced the end of their 14-season partnership.
Testing wraps up at Valencia's Ricardo Tormo circuit with a third and final day on Wednesday local time.
Here's a wrap-up of how each manufacturer went:

HONDA
Marquez and Pedrosa logged almost 150 laps between them aboard the 2014 bike the pair tested mid-season and an evolution developed through Casey Stoner's testing in Japan. They plan to focus on just one of the bikes at Wednesday's third and final day.
The new world champion also sported a new helmet, with a pair of film strips marking his performance at every stop during his triumphant rookie MotoGP season.
Our favourite is the entry the one for Phillip Island: "Oops!" with a black flag ...
YAMAHA
For the crossed-tuning forks it was their final day of testing for 2013, trying out a new frame for the YZR-M1 as well as a new electronics package to extract every bit of performance from next year's fuel limit of 20 litres for a race.
Over at the Tech3 satellite operation, Bradley Smith enjoyed his first experience of a full factory-spec Yamaha - lapping marginally faster than Rossi - while Moto2 champ Pol Espargaro lopped 1.3s off yesterday's best as he makes the step up to Yamaha's MotoGP bike.
DUCATI
Cal Crutchlow endured his first Ducati crash thanks to the tricky Desmosedici's bugbear: a lack of front-end grip.
"We changed the bike really drastically at the end of the day and seemed to have found something, but it was a compromise, as I had rear grip but little front grip and crashed!" the gritty Brit said. "I think we could've been in the mid-31s if we had pushed."
Meantime, teammate Andrea Dovisioso and test rider Michele Pirro spent time testing an updated chassis, fairing and electronics as the Italian team tries to move forward under new team boss, ex-Aprilia World Superbike chief Gigi Dall'Igna.
CUSTOMER AND CRT BIKES
2006 world champion Nicky Hayden had his first hit-out aboard Honda's new RCV1000R production bike, the American excited to try out his new machine after five years of riding the notoriously difficult Ducati.
"This is a new project and there is a long road ahead but that's what makes it so interesting," Hayden said. "I really enjoyed my first contact with the bike. We can see how much work there is to do but the base is solid."
Also happy with their new bikes were Colin Edwards and Aleix Espargaro, who got their first taste of Yamaha's leased frame/engine/swingarm package at NGM Mobile Forward Racing.
"It was a pleasure!" the laid-back Texan Edwards said. "Obviously, I have a long history with Yamaha and it was nice to get back home. It feels good and the bike is good."
The pair ran limited laps as they work with Yamaha on setting up the electronics systems for the new-for-2014 package.
MotoGP debutante Scott Redding was limited to just 22 laps as his broken wrist, injured in a crash at Phillip Island last month, flared up.
