MARC Marquez’s hellish 2015 season has continued, MotoGP’s reigning world champion breaking his hand in a training accident.
Marquez fell while training on his mountain bike and fractured the fifth metacarpal of his left hand, the bone in the palm of the hand connected to his pinky finger.
He underwent surgery in Barcelona to have the fracture plated and screwed which should allow him to race in next weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.
“We have operated on Marc Marquez to treat a torsion fracture of the fifth metacarpal of his left hand,” a statement from Dr. Xavier Mir, surgeon of choice for most MotoGP riders, said.
“The surgery consisted of a reduction and internal fixation of the bone, through screws for compression and a neutralising titanium plate with six holes.
“Marc will remain in hospital for 24 hours, and in 48 hours will begin functional rehabilitation.”
Although he is expected to be fit to race in Japan, the Motegi round is just the first of three straight weekends of racing as MotoGP tackles its final flyaway events of the season.
It’s the second time Marquez has injured his left hand this year, breaking his pinky finger in another training accident ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix where his hand was run over by another motorbike.
This latest injury is really the cherry on top of an awful season, Marquez watching his crown slip away with a series of crashes and poor performances as he tries to manhandle a Honda that lacks the handling of years past.
His frustration was highlighted by his fury at his early race crash last weekend at Aragon, another front-end washout sending him tumbling into retirement when he was pursuing eventual winner Jorge Lorenzo.
