Moto3: The two championship contenders - Danny Kent and Enea Bastianini have been involved in a championship defining crash at Philip Island.

DANNY Kent’s efforts to became the first British world champion since the legendary Barry Sheene in 1977 were put on hold after a thrill-a-minute Moto3 race at Phillip Island.

Honda rider Kent and nearest rival Italian Enea Bastianni, also on a Honda, both crashed in a spectacular high-side accident involving four bikes on the Southern Loop corner on the 13th lap.

The two ended the race in the Medical Centre, both cleared of serious injury.

Portuguese Honda rider Miguel Oliveira won the 23-lap chaos to stay within 40 points of Kent in the championship standings with two races to go.

“I can’t believe, what a crazy race,” Oliveira said.

Spaniard Efren Vazquez (Honda) was second, just 0.029 seconds ahead ahead of South African Brad Binder on a KTM.

Pole-sitter John McPhee retired after six laps.

Australian Remy Gardner, son of 1987 500cc world champion, avoided the track turmoil finished 10th – his best result of the season.

Australian wildcard Olly Simpson was 19th, while Matt Barton’s hopes ended on the 13th lap.

Just 19 of the 36 125cc machines finished.
