Jorge Lorenzo admits he was lucky after rival Marc Marquez was disqualified

AUSTRALIAN MotoGP Grand Prix winner Jorge Lorenzo admits he was “very lucky” after Honda’s pit-stop brain fade handed him the win.

AUSTRALIAN MotoGP Grand Prix winner Jorge Lorenzo admits he was “very lucky” after Honda’s pit-stop brain fade handed him the chequered flag.

Marquez had pace and was pushing the leading Lorenzo hard when the world championship leader was black flagged for failing to pit on time.

It meant Lorenzo could ease off and cruise to victory ahead of Honda's Dani Pedrosa and team-mate Valentino Rossi.

It was Lorenzo’s 29th win of his MotoGP career but first in the category in Australia.

“We’re very happy and it was a great result,” Lorenzo said.

“We were very lucky – because without the mistake from Marc he would have finished first or second.”

“Because he was very strong today as always.”

Lorenzo trails Marquez by just 18 points in the race for the world title.

But the Yamaha star said it was still Marquez’s championship to lose as the series heads to Japan.

“The championship changes so much,” he said.

“Marc is so competitive at all the tracks.

“So if he stays in first, second or even third places, he can win the championship.

“We have to try and win as much as possible.”
