St Laurence’s College bowling linchpin Jacob Bingham turned into a matchwinning all-rounder on Saturday as his side broke through for a rousing First XI win over St Patrick’s College.

Bingham’s 38 not out proved the difference as Laurie’s reached 9-143 after being in grave danger of crumbling for around 100.

St Pat’s responded with 132 and right arm fast bowler Bingham was again front and centre.

After producing the innings of the day, Bingham then conjured up the bowling performance of the match to take 2-12 from nine overs as St Patrick’s were restricted to 8-103.

In other matches, premiers Iona (8-177) went on their winning way against Padua (96), Villanova (1-123) enjoyed a nine wicket win over St Edmund’s (120) and Jack Watson inspired Marist (6-137) claimed a local derby victory against St Peters on Pink Stumps Day.

Pink Stumps Day raises funds for the McGrath Foundation which hires nurses to care for patients with breast cancer.

Tracy Bevan, the best friend of the late Jane McGrath whom the foundation is named after, sent a special message to the St Peters community thanking them for their involvement.

IONA v PADUA

The Iona bowling unit of swing bowler Finn Haller, Luke Biddle (3-27), Flynn Donnelly (1-14), Jesse Haller (3-20) and spin bowler James Turner (2-16) overwhelmed their rivals.

The bowlers were helped, of course, by the batting performance which gave them runs to play with.

But it was still a strong effort to bowl a young Padua side out for less than 100 runs.

Padua were more than competitive early as Alister Bauer (3-25) made inroads, but Alexander Harrison (52, 89 balls) dropped anchor and around him Luke Biddle (34) latched on to build a winning total.

It was a fine performance by Harrison whose milestone half century was the best innings of the game.

Alister Bauer had a splendid day for Padua, top scoring with 26 against the new ball, and they taking three top order wickets.

ST LAURENCE’S v ST PATRICK’S

St Pat’s Max Hillard took 4-24, but he played in a losing side as Laurie’s Bingham batted and bowled his way to victory.

St Laurence’s were in trouble batting, but No. 8 Bingham found a match high score of 38 not out, and together with Benjamin Stallman (16) and Matthew Bromley, he scrambled Laurie’s to 143.

And St Laurence’s needed every run after Hillard had destroyed the middle order.

Hillard had plenty of support as St Pat’s bowlers Alexander Bullock (2-24), Carter McSweeney (1-21), Adam Hogan (1-31) and first round hero Will Mortimer (1-40) combined to put St Pat’s into a winning position.

But Bingham then impacted the game with the ball, and with wonderful support from Gus Jones-Sheppard (1-21) and Bromley (3-26), St Laurence’s were able to nip the Paddies’ innings in the bud and win by 11 runs.

This was despite Will Mortimer (25 not) threatening to bring his side home.

MARIST v ST PETERS

Jack Watson claimed five wickets for Ashgrove in a tense cross suburb clash.

Marist (6-137) inched over the line against St Peters (135), with captain Joey Laner (52 not out) taking it upon himself to see his side home.

It was a tremendous captain’s knock by Laner, who had earlier enjoyed Watson’s performance at the bowling crease.

Laner also built pressure when he bowled, and so did William Easter (2-17), Archie Murray (2-18) and Archer Tallon (1-18).

But it was Watson’s moment in the limelight with five wickets as he claimed the important wickets of Beau Guppy (21), Lachie Fisher (19) and Hugh Brennan (16) who were trying to rebuild the lower order.

When Ashgrove batted, batting ace Isaac Krause turned into a bowling ace. He twice took wickets which placed St Peters on top, and it really took until Tallon (24, 98 balls) joined Laner before the Ashgrove innings gained stability.

Archie Murray then cut through the tension to blast 15 not out from 10 balls.

VILLANOVA v ST EDMUND’S

Villanova won its match against St Edmund’s courtesy of its bowling, which dismissed their rivals for 120.

Finn Thallon claimed 2-8, Oscar Tesch 1-16, Pauli Samuel (2-42), Luscs D Amore (2-11) and Lachlan Whaites (2-14) in restricted Eddies.

When Villa batted, Max Knight unleashed. He hit 71 from 34 balls, including seven fours and six sixes.
