Elite sports players have been known to get heated at times when a decision doesn’t go their way, but you won’t see too many bigger blow ups than this one.
Playing against the Adelaide Giants in the final game of the Australian Baseball League semi-final series at West Beach on Sunday night – with a spot in the Championship Series at stake – Canberra Cavalry shot stop Kelvin Melean came face-to-face with umpire Trent Thomas at the top of the seventh inning.
While at-bat, Melean tried to call time as he felt he was being rushed by Giants pitcher Ryan Chaffee, however he didn’t receive it and earned a strike after failing to face up to the pitch.
Commentators debated the call during the live coverage, with both agreeing Melean had no real case to plead.

“Kelvin Melean had some pointed words, he needs to be careful,” they said.
“He’s not happy with (umpire) Trent Thomas.
“What Chaffee is doing is getting the ball and throwing, he’s not going to be waiting.
“As soon as he puts his feet in that batter’s box he’s ready to throw the ball.
“He’s not just going to sit around and go ‘are you ready to face?’
“We’re not playing tennis here.
“He (Melean) was calling time and he didn’t get it, that’s what he was upset about, he was asking for it but the rule goes just because you ask for it, doesn’t mean the umpire has to grant it.”
After eventually being struck out, Melean exploded at Thomas which resulted in him being ejected from the match.
Adelaide went on to win the match 6-3 to advance to the Championship Series against Melbourne Aces, which kicks off this weekend.
