The Advertiser ushered in a new era for Adelaide’s premier schoolboy competition on Saturday, with the live stream of the clash between Sacred Heart and Westminster.
Speaking before the match, Hearts skipper Darcy Gluyas said the game shown on Advertiser.com.au would showcase some of SA’s best young talent.
“It’s really exciting to be part of this (live stream) for the first time,” Gluyas, 17, said.
“I know Westminster has a good side this year, so it’s going to be a good challenge for us.
“There’s been lots of talent brought into the competition and it’s a special competition.”
DRAFT PROSPECTS: LOCAL TALENT TO TEMPT CROWS IN FIRST ROUND
Former Sacred Heart scholar Will Day (Hawthorn) was selected in last year’s AFL Draft and school mate Charlie Ballard (Gold Coast) was picked in 2018.
Messenger Shield stars Kysaiah Pickett (Melbourne), Harry Schoenberg (Adelaide), Will Gould (Sydney), Dylan Stephens (Sydney) and Cameron Taheny (Geelong) were also chosen.
Heart’s only loss so far this season was to Prince Alfred two weeks ago.
Westminster meanwhile, is hoping to return to the winners’ list this weekend following a 36-point loss to the reigning three-time champion.
Skipper Harvey Bock said live streaming games would boost the already fierce rivalries between colleges and increase the buzz around the competition.
“It’s pretty cool,” said Bock, who also features at SANFL under-18 level for West Adelaide.
“It should be a really good contest as well, so hopefully it will great for people watching.
“We are pretty close with the boys from Sacred Heart, so there’s friendships there but once we get on the field it will be a nice, heated battle.”
Bock was grateful the school competition was given the green light this year, as doubts hung over it due to the COVID-19 shutdown.
