A bulked-up UNSW Magpies turned on the style to power past Fremantle Marlins and stay hot on the heels of the men’s Australian Water Polo League leaders.

Aussie skipper Nathan Power scored five times, as did Canadian Nicolas Constantin-Bicari as the Magpies won every quarter to grab an 18-9 success.

After leading 4-3 at quarter-time, UNSW cleared out in the second term, scoring seven times to take a match-winning 11-5 lead.

Meanwhile, a thrilling UNSW Killerwhales recovery came unstuck in a penalty shootout as Fremantle Marlins took their winning streak to nine games to open the AWL women’s season.

The visiting Killerwhales were down 6-2 at the main break as the hosts, who won Saturday’s clash between the two clubs 15-7, got goals from Stephania and Ioanna Haralabidis, Sienna Walker and Jessica Bihler to take command

But first signs of a fightback came in the third quarter as the margin closed to 9-6 and they continued the momentum into the final eight minutess on the back of five goals from Charley Porter and Momo Inoue, both with doubles, and Ruby Swadling to tie the game at 11-11.

But the Marlins held their nerve under pressure to win 16-15, putting them in good heart ahead of an eight-game east coast swing, starting next week against Balmain.

PREVIEW

Fresh off a trip to Doha for the World Aquatics Championships, Aussie Sharks co-captain Nathan Power is back with UNSW Wests Magpies to push for another Australian Water Polo League championship.

It comes amid a hectic year for water polo ahead of the Paris Olympics, with more eyes than ever on the sport.

“There’s just a little bit more intensity this year and a lot more excitement,” Power said.

The reigning bmen’s champions are set to take on Fremantle Marlins on Sunday in Perth as part of a double-header with the women’s teams, with the action available to stream LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV.

From the Spanish and Croatian leagues to his decade-long national team tenure, Power has experienced almost everything in his water polo career.

But he reserves a special spot for playing in his home country in the AWL.

“Obviously it’s a lot of fun, getting to travel with the national team and compete on that world stage,” Power said.

“But I think a major thing that drives players in this country is how special their connection to their club is.

“In Australia, water polo is an amateur sport, but when we play overseas we’re playing against professional teams.

“It means that at Australian clubs, everyone is invested and wants to be there, everyone is there because they love to be there and love the sport they play.

“It means you’re in a full team of people whose passion is to play the sport, it’s not a job for them.”

The Magpies have played four games without Power and Sharks teammate Charlie Negus to open their season, recording just one loss in the grand final rematch against Sydney University Lions.

While Power said the Lions would likely be contenders again this season, the finals places are far from decided.

“I think we’re looking at Sydney Uni and Drummoyne as the biggest challengers this season,” he said.

“But in saying that, we’ve seen some really strong performances from both the teams in Perth, Balmain and Cronulla.

“I think there’s a very strong cohort of teams this year with super talented players.

“Getting into the top six this year for a lot of teams will be a big challenge, and from there I think it’s going to be very cut-throat to win the title.”
