Australian Olympic medallist Bronwen Knox has inspired the Torpedoes to a big win to start a big weekend of action away from home. Watch the REPLAYS from the AWL.

Australian veteran Bronwen Knox has spearheaded a dominant win for the Torpedoes as the girls from the west kicked off a six-game Australian Water Polo League road trip in the right fashion.

The two-time bronze medallist, who has joined the UWA side this season to help develop the next generation of young stars, controlled the midfield as the Western Australians powered past Cronulla.

In a match that featured several exciting youngsters, it was little surprise that the experience of Knox shone through as the Torpedoes kicked clear to a 15-7 win.

Knox finished with three goals, while Italian import Gloria Giachi led the scorers with four goals including a first quarter double as the Torpedoes exploded out of the blocks.

The Western Australians scored three unanswered goals in the first quarter before extending their lead to four goals at the half time break despite Cronulla’s Hikaru Shitara fighting back with a second quarter double.

But it was a third quarter domination, in which Pippa Pedley and Dayna O’Leary both put two goals in the back of the net, where the Torpedoes really did the damage.

By the time the final quarter started, the difference was out to an insurmountable nine goals.

But it didn’t stop the Sharks from fighting with young debutant Nell Payne scoring a double to celebrate her first foray into the Australian Water Polo League.

The Sharks managed to bounce back in the men’s clash, with the return of Aussie Sharks Marcus Berehulak and Rhys Holden spearheading the locals to a 9-7 win over the Torpedoes.

PREVIEW: Stingers big guns back for club duties

Fresh off a sixth-place finish at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, the Aussie Stingers have dispersed into their clubs for the Australian Water Polo League season.

All but one of the 15 player squad for the World Championships calls the AWL home, with Bronte Halligan currently playing in Italy.

Ahead of a massive four days of water polo, which kicks off with the Cronulla Sharks hosting UWA Torpedoes in a big men’s and women’s doubleheader on Thursday LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV, we take a look at all the Aussie Stingers playing for an Olympic call-up from the AWL.

The Sharks have had a mixed start to their season with five wins and three losses, with Stingers’ goalkeeper Claire Durston leading the defence.

They have been bolstered by the return of American-born Dani Jackovich, who made her international debut at the championship.

Sixth-placed Sharks haven’t played since their double victory over Adelaide Jets late last month.

Meanwhile, the fifth-placed Torpedoes are riding a six-game win streak, but are about to embark on a 10-game away trip before returning home for their last game against Fremantle.

Reigning women’s champions, Sydney Uni Lions, have struggled early in their title defence, losing six of eight games so far.

They will be hoping the return of Stingers trio Keesja Gofers, Tilly Kearns and teenage star Sienna Green will add some much needed firepower.

UTS Balmain Tigers also boast three national players in Sienna Hearn, Nioka Thomas and goalkeeper Genevieve Longman.

Hearn has been a goalscoring machine since returning to the league, grabbing nine goals in just two games.

Dani Jackovich made her international debut for the Aussie Stingers in Doha.

Thomas, who sat out the World Championships, has been leading the charge in their absence, recording 19 goals in eight games.

Stingers’ attacker Ruby Swadling has been a standout for UNSW Wests Killerwhales since her return from a stint in America, averaging four goals per game.

Although Queensland Thunder have been without six national team players for the majority of their campaign so far, they are sitting on the top of the table, with no losses.

Abby Andrews, Charlize Andrews, Tenealle Fasala, Bridget Leeson-Smith. Gabi Palm and Alice Williams are all back in the Sunshine State, while veteran Elle Armit stayed home and has amassed 18 goals in eight games for the Thunder.

Queensland local Charlize Andrews returned to the league with a bang, scoring seven goals in the Thunder’s recent double victory against Sydney Uni.

The Fremantle Marlins are also undefeated so far. with Stingers captain Zoe Arancini and centre-back Sofie Pontre joining fellow Stinger Holly Young back in WA.
