PREVIEW: STATE SET FOR STATE LEAGUE FINALE

The heartbreak of missing out a year ago is driving Tea Tree Gully towards State League tennis grand final glory, according to star player Ashwin Vijayaragavan.

A terrific regular season in 2021 was soured by failure in the finals and Vijayaragavan, a former Indian Davis Cup team member, said his team had a renewed focus ahead of next Saturday’s men’s decider.

“Last year we had a very successful season until the finals and then fell short,” said Vijayaragavan, who leads the player of the year leaderboard after a stellar season.

“This time we’ve stuck well as a team, a couple of young blokes have come in and strengthened it. One thing good about us is our team chemistry has been amazing.”

The Advertiser will exclusively live stream the Tennis SA State League grand finals on March 25 and 26.

Friday night will see the juniors do battle from 6pm followed by the senior deciders on Saturday from 3pm, with both events broadcast live from Showcourt 1 at Memorial Drive.

Tea Tree Gully defeated Glenlea in their semi-final to progress to the decider and will face Seaside, who defeated the Gators last week.

Vijayaragavan, a former world top 100 junior player who also played US college tennis at the University of Texas, said he had found a home at TTG and it would be a special moment if his side were to bring home silverware.

He said they would also be playing for much-loved club junior captain Jai Clarke, who died earlier this month.

“It’s going to be more than just a grand final for us and even more important for us to win it for him,” Vijayaragavan said.

“It’s going to be emotional because he was a very close member of the Tea Tree Gully unit.”

In the women’s competition, powerhouse side Glenlea will take on rivals Seacliff in the grand final.

Gators captain Olivia Ley said winning a late home and away season game against Seacliff gave the side confidence, which helped it get over the line in the semi-final.

“We’ve had success in this competition and this year we’re working really well together … to win would mean a lot to everyone at the club, the people that come and support each week,” Ley said.

Seacliff defeated Happy Valley in the preliminary final to win through to the decider.

In the junior State League, East Adelaide Payneham is through and will face either Seaside or Seacliff in the boys’ decider while Athelstone and Peake Gardens Riverside play off for the right to take on Glenlea in the girls’.

The senior grand final action from Showcourt 1 at Memorial Drive will be broadcast live on The Advertiser website from 3pm on Saturday, March 26.
