Live stream: Watch the Australian Junior Claycourt Championships finals day

Long-time friends and training partners have met as adversaries at the Junior Claycourt Championship finals. Find out who claimed bragging rights? Full REPLAYS of all the deciders.

New South Wales ace Ethan Domingo has credited a soothing technique learnt halfway round the world with unlocking his full potential at the Junior Claycourt Nationals.

Domingo powered past best friend Flynn Coventry-Searle 7-5, 6-2 in the final in Canberra, claiming his first national title in the process.

But it was a breathing technique, taught to the young gun during an international tour to Germany last year which was the secret behind his success.

Prior to the week in Canberra, the tournament’s top seed had never progressed past the semi-finals stage. He blamed it on a lack of concentration on court.

“I would win the first set and then my head starts to drift away from the game,” Domingo said.

“This week I tried to keep myself locked in. I would go to my towel and use box breathing to keep myself focussed.

“It wasn’t after every point, but every pressure point after a long rally. I was on a (Tennis Australia) tour last year (to Europe) and we learnt how to do it. I started using it this tournament and it really made a difference.”

Ana Maric (VIC) [1] v Piyushi Bandara (ACT) [6] (Girls 12/u Singles Final)

Victorian champion Ana Maric capped off a perfect week on the Canberra courts, being crowned the Under-12 girls champion after a straight sets win on Sunday.

Maric, 11, entered the Australian Junior Claycourt Championships as the top-seed in the girls draw and it wasn’t hard to see why, with the young gun not dropping a set on her way to the national title.

Such was her dominance over the week, the Victorian champion never played in a tiebreaker and won six of the 10 sets she played by a score of 6-1 or better. In the final she defeated ACT local Piyushi Bandara 6-4, 6-1.

Maric made headlines last year when she shared the Rod Laver Arena court with Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in a charity doubles match, but even that moment might be superseded by her first national championship.

Tori Russell (QLD) [5] v Emilie Chen (NSW) [2] (Girls 14/u Singles Final)

In the under-14 girls NSW second seed Emilie Chen survived a first set onslaught from Queensland’s Tori Russell, before dominating the second to be crowned national champion.

Chen had to weather the storm as Russell used her impressive ground game to fight her way back into the second set.

But staring down a potential tiebreaker, Chen unleashed a volley of sharp forehands to fight back from 40-15 down, to break Russell’s serve and clinch the opening set.

The momentum shift was clear with Chen winning the opening three games of the second set, setting up an unassailable lead as she cruised to a 7-5, 6-3 win in the final.

Tommy Camus (ACT) [1] v v Christian Joseph (QLD) [2] (Boys 12/u Singles Final)

A semi-finallist at this year’s grass court championships back in January, Queenslander Christian Joseph impressed on the clay to shock hometown top-seed Tommy Camus in the Under-12 boys final.

Joseph was laser focussed from the first serve, dispatching of his rival 6-3 in the opening set before getting into the grind.

Camus appeared destined to force a third and deciding set in the final, before Joseph came alive late in the second set to clinch a blistering tiebreaker and take the trophy in straight sets.

REPLAY

Pavitar Pansi (NSW) [7] v Bhavya Bhardwaj (NSW) [3] (Girls U14 3rd Place Play-Off)

Third seed Bhavya Bhardwaj rose to the occasion in the Under-14 girls play-off for third place when she dispatched Pavitar Pansi in the deciding set after a hard-fought contest.

Bhardwaj took the opening set 6-4, but soon found herself on the receiving end in the second as Pansi stormed back to claim it 6-2.

But Bhardwaj always had the measure of her opponent in the tiebreaker and closed out the match 10-6.

Domingo, who entered the national championships as the top seed, said he was excited to get into the action after beating his rival the last time they played in a tournament on the NSW Central Coast.

The pair, who train together at Voyager Tennis in Sydney, have met 12 times in tournaments with Coventry-Searle leading the head-to-head record 7-5.

“We train together every day in Sydney, we know everything about each other’s game,” Domingo said after his semi-final victory over Ren Asai.

“We are very good friends, but we just have to forget about that, get into the match and win.

“We are always competing against each other when we step onto the court, even in training. This is just the same thing.”

The finals day will be littered with top seeds, with Under-12 boys no. 1 Tommy Camus taking on Christian Joseph in the final while Under-12 girls top seed Ana Maric will clash with Piyushi Bandara.

In the under-14 girls final Queensland’s giant slayer Tori Russell will go head-to-head with second seed Emilie Chen, who was impressive in her straight sets win over Bhavya Bhardwaj in the semi-finals.
