The Hunter Hurricanes women have secured their first win of the Australian Water Polo League season, but they had to do it the hard way.

Speared on by a raucous home crowd at the Lambton Pool, Hurricanes goal keeper Abbey O’Toole proved the hero in a thrilling penalty shoot-out.

O’Toole managed two crunch saves in the extra time shoot-out as the Hurricanes finished 14-12 winners after the sides were locked at 10-10 at the end of extra time.

Hunter sharpshooter Emma Preece continued her stellar season in front of goal picking up five of her own.

Her efforts were only bettered by Adelaide rising star Amy Middlemass, with the Queenslander netting six goals for the Jets.

In the men’s clash an emotion-charged Adelaide side turned the tables on the Hurricanes after going down to their rivals the previous night.

Despite their coach being ejected from the pool deck following an emotional tirade, the Jets overcame the adversity to take a two-goal win over the Hurricanes to secure the club’s first win of the AWL season.

Young gun Jake Martin added to the family’s famed legacy in South Australain water polo netting a hattrick for the Jets, with teammates Caleb Millin and Seb Houston also picking up three goals each in the 13-11 result.

Millin now sits just outside the top five goalscorers for the season with 20 in eight games.

PREVIEW

Wins may have been scarce so far this season, but the Hunter Hurricanes men’s side have a golden opportunity to finish their Australian Water Polo League campaign with a flurry.

The Hurricanes face the visiting Adelaide Jets for the second time in two days at Lambton Pool on Friday and KommunityTV will be there to exclusively LIVE STREAM both the men’s and women’s games from 4pm.

It’s the start of a stretch of games where they can possibly make up ground in the standings.

After a swag of away games, including two two-game series in Western Australia, the Hurricanes play nine of their final 12 games at home.

That includes a run of eight consecutive games at Lambton Pool before a last-round visit to Cronulla.

The Hurricanes men’s side have given title aspirants Drummoyne, Sydney University, Fremantle and Cronulla a real run for their money in games this season.

They twice fell agonisingly short of toppling the Marlins in their home pool, losing by two goals in the first game before being stung by a late goal in a 9-8 defeat in the second.

Italian star Giorgio Alessandria has led the way with 13 goals while Jake Robinson has grabbed 10.

Emma Preece has been the star of the show for the Hunter women.

Before the first match against the Jets on Thursday, she had scored 15 (or 32 per cent) of her side’s 46 goals.

That included six of their eight goals in the season opener against Drummoyne and leaves her ensconced among the top 10 goalscorers in the competition.

She has been the shining light in a disappointing Hunter offensive showing, where they have failed to register double figures in any of their eight games up until Thursday’s game.

Meanwhile, the Jets will be chasing stronger defensive performances as they look to climb the men’s and women’s ladders.

Before Thursday’s game, Adelaide’s men side had conceded 139 goals in just eight games while the women leaked 145 goals.

But in Tyler Krenkels, Caleb Millin and Amy Middlemas they have three proven goalscorers that are among the competition’s best.

Millin scored six goals in the recent doubleheader defeat to Queensland Thunder.
