SEMI-FINAL REPLAYS
Western Australia v Victoria (19/U Semi-Final)
Victoria has secured the final spot on offer in the championship deciders on Wednesday with a hard-fought 25-21 win over Western Australia.
In a tight first quarter only 12 goals in total were scored with Victoria up by two at the break.
At halftime the score was locked at 14-14.
Incredibly Victoria only cracked 20 goals in the dying minutes of the third quarter before taking a 21-17 lead into the final break.
By game end Victoria had added just four more goals to their tally but it was enough for the win.
Sahara Ball top scored for the Victorians with 19 goals while WA’s Lily Knight led all comers with 21.
Victoria v New South Wales (17/U Semi-Final)
In an extraordinary match of big highs and lows, extra time was needed to split Victoria and New South Wales in an epic semi-final.
Locked at 32-32 after four quarters, both sides then put on three goals each in the first extra time.
In the second stanza NSW were finally able to gain an edge and took the match 42-38 to advance to the grand final.
NSW defender Eva Carneiro said she and teammates were elated with the result.
“We definitely put up a good fight,’’ she said.
“We stuck to our processes and it was certainly a good match up,’’
The circle defender said she was “a bit surprised’’ the match went beyond four quarters.
“I’m just glad we showed up in overtime,’’ she said.
The hosts came out to win in this semi-final, hitting the court with speed and intensity and taking the Victorians by surprise early.
By the first break NSW was up 12-4 with Marley Dighton scoring nine for the Blues.
But things took a turn with Victoria finding their feet and blasting back into contention in an extraordinary second period.
The Vics put on 11 goals to NSW’s four to trail by just one at halftime.
And the comeback continued with the fired up Victorians taking a 25-24 lead into the three-quarter time break before a 32-32 draw at the end of the fourth forced the match into extra time.
Sharpshooter Dighton finished with 37 of her side’s 42 goals in a decisive attacking performance.
Queensland v New South Wales (19/U Semi-Final)
In netball’s version of State of Origin, NSW and Queensland fought to advance to Wednesday’s grand final and it was a memorable battle.
Queensland launched a last-ditch comeback just minutes from time but fell just short with the honours going to NSW in one of the closest and most hotly fought contests of the tournament.
NSW players fell to the court in exhaustion and elation after confirming they had booked a spot in the grand final with their 38-37 win.
Queenslander Ellie Brice paid tribute to NSW for a great game.
“That derby is honestly always a real challenge and always exciting. We love to play against them,” Brice said.
“Those girls, our girls, they have no quit in them and I’m very proud to be playing alongside them.
“But far out, that’s a tough one to swallow. But we still have another game and we’ll fight for it.’’
It was a thrilling end to an extraordinary battle.
In a tit-for-tat opening quarter Tia Crobie scored eight goals for Queensland as the Maroons took a goal edge into the break.
Nicole Barge – the tournament’s leading scorer across the pool games – contributed seven for NSW in the opening 10.
There was little between the two old rivals of netball in the first half until the final five minutes of the second quarter when the Blues surged ahead by five.
A combination of sharp passing, solid shooting and a timely intercept saw NSW secure a 24-19 halftime lead.
Barge’s accuracy saw her net 20 for the half in an impressive performance.
NSW had a 31-28 lead at the third break before holding tough to take the match 38-37.
Barge ended the match with 32 goals in a stellar performance from the NSW sharp shooter.
South Australia v Western Australia (17/U Semi-Final)
South Australia recovered from a slow start in their semi-final on Tuesday to keep their undefeated run in the 17/U’s intact and book a spot in Wednesday’s decider of the showcase event for the rising stars of Australian netball.
The South Australians turned an early 6-9 deficit into a 10 goal victory over Western Australia in their Sydney encounter.
SA goal defender Jazmine McKay said the way her team fought back from their early deficit was pleasing heading into the tournament decider.
“We showed we can come back when we are down, that we are fighters,’’ she said.
“I think it’s that ability to lift our heads and each other up that has helped us here.’’
Slick shooting was a feature of the match – along with cowbells rung for every goal scored by the two sides.
WA’s Skyla Payne was a standout in the opening quarter, helping her side to a 9-6 lead by nailing eight goals.
But South Australia came back from the break with intent, outscoring WA 12-6 in the second quarter to take a 18-15 jump into halftime.
Elouise Nordhausen and Molly Chapman ended the half with eight goals each in a strong performance with Payne best for WA with 13.
SA then extended their lead to 29-20 at three-quarter time before taking the match 39-29.
Nordhausen was outstanding with her 21 goal contribution.
