After a wild week of heavy deluges forcing the ASSRL National Championships to move from Port Macquarie, to Wauchope and finally to Kempsey - on grand finals day, the only thing it was raining was sky blue.

NSW Combined High Schools capped a wild week on the NSW Mid North Coast with a Championship double, taking out the Under-16 girls and Under-15 boys Pool A titles.

The NSW girls, who had based their tournament off a brilliant attack, had to turn to their staunch defence to get them home 10-6 against rivals Queensland.

NSW halfback Ella Greatz stood tall in the final, first setting up the match-winning try in the final five minutes with an offload to Freedom Ropati before pulling off a last-ditch tackle on her own line as the hooter blared in the background.

It was a brave performance from the Illawarra Steelers young gun who had been one of the players of the tournament with her attacking prowess setting up countless tries for her outside players Ropati and Anastasia Leatupue.

The girls triumph in a classic capped off a great day for the home state, who had earlier proved too strong for Queensland Maroons in the boys final.

A barnstorming first half display has set the platform for NSW CHS to be crowned ASSRL boys U15 champions with a 24-4 victory over Queensland on Friday.

After finals day was switched earlier in the morning from rain-soaked Port Macquarie to Kempsey, NSW CHS clicked into gear early and never looked likely to relinquish their advantage, even with winger Morgan Carter in the sin bin late on.

Hooker Ston Finau broke the game open in the 13th minute, picking up a Queensland grubber and racing the length of the field to score. He sealed the four-pointer with a kiss to the crowd.

Centre Luca Te Awa continued his amazing success rate at the tournament with the conversion and NSW CHS led 6-0.

Hills Sports’ Montee Leatupue got the second after a slick backline movement and impressive fullback Oliver Burton showed a clean pair of heels, sprinting down to the sideline to grab the third.

They led 16-0 at the break.

Queensland came out firing in the second half but couldn’t breach the NSW CHS defence until late on when Christopher Vaimili-Toalepai made the most of Carter’s sin binning to score in the corner.

But they left themselves too much to do and NSW CHS put the seal on the win when Hakaapiapi Amone barged over with just minutes remaing.

PREVIEW

The stage has been set for two ultimate State of Origin battles to take over the ASSRL Under-15/16 National Championships in Kempsey.

Queensland Maroons flashed into the final on Thursday, punching their ticket to face a dominant NSW Combined High Schools side with two tries in two minutes against NSW Combined Catholic Colleges.

Their rivals have had an extended wait for their final game, with two days of washed out action meaning the sky blues haven’t taken the field since their 42-point shut-out of the ACT on Monday.

The two sides will be well-matched on the field with the ball-playing, skill men in the middle led by NSW CHS lock forward Hayden Bell, and the raw pace out wide in Queensland’s Billo Wotton and Baxter Best.

The women’s final on Friday will also pit Queensland against NSW Combined High Schools, but these two sides couldn’t be any different.

The sky blues rise to the final has been spearheaded by their speedsters out wide and the silky hands of halfback Ella Greatz, while standing opposite them is the most-feared forward pack in the tournament.

Fearless leader Evelyn Roberts is joined by an impressive hit squad including backrowers Star Clarke and Aaliyah Temete as well as dual-code star Macey Lahrs.

Victoria and the First Nations Goannas will clash in the Under-15 Boys Pool B Championship final, with the southern state enterring the clash as favourites after defeating their decider rivals 38-4 earlier in the week.
