Live stream: Panthers young gun Jhett Sydir aiming up for NSW CCC at ASSRL National U18 Championships

He is the heir apparent coming through the ranks at the Panthers, and NSW Combined Catholic Colleges playmaker Jhett Sydir has a chance to prove just why on the national stage.

Panthers young gun Jhett Sydir has always had to prove himself.

Rising through the biggest and toughest junior system in the country, the 17 had to then navigate his way through the Peter Mulholland Cup as a bottom-ager, being handed the reins to the most successful schoolboys side of the past decade.

The Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown playmaker has scratched and clawed his way through every challenge that has come his way.

It is why his school coach, Noah Meares, believes the young halfback is ready to rise to do it again by steering NSW Combined High Schools to back-to-back ASSRL Under-18 titles.

Every match of the ASSRL National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV across all of News Corp Australia’s digital mastheads from July 7-12.

“He knows he is a good player, next week he will get to prove that to everyone,” Meares said.

The cool-headed halfback doesn’t get many plaudits for the Patrician Brothers College performances in the NRL Schoolboy Cup this year, with the school’s high-powered forward pack stealing the limelight.

With names like Jacob Halangahu, Tyson Sangalang and Josiah Vaha’akolo-Fifita – all who will join Sydir in the NSW CCC opens side – it’s not hard to see why the man behind them pulling the strings has flown under the radar.

But Meares is adamant Sydir’s time out of the spotlight is about to be over.

“I think his level is getting better every time he takes the field,” Meares said.

“With how good he can control the team and the tempo of the game. He plays a little bit Mitch Moses-esque – he controls everything and then at the click of the fingers he can turn on the speed or throw a long ball to pull the opposition apart.

“He has always had the skills, but one of the things we have worked with him on is to calm him down. He was a little frantic on the field when he was younger. We have made it a focal point to keep him level headed and in the moment.”

Sydir spearheaded the Patrician Brothers side while in Year 11 last year, and Meares said the extra year in the opens level and coming head-to-head with the best halves of that age group had steeled the young playmaker.

“Playing that extra year can be a big help,” Meares said. “They get that first taste of footy. It can toughen them up. For the ones who can handle it, it gives them that confidence boost.

“You just look at the fact he went one-on-one with Lachie Galvin at Westfields and we know what he has done since. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jhett follows in a similar trajectory.”

Sydir played halfback for the Panthers Harold Matts team this season, and sits in a long line of succession for Nathan Cleary’s throne at the foot of the mountains which includes Sunshine Coast young gun Zack Lamont.
