WHAT’S DIFFERENT IN 2023?

A new era of women’s rugby league will dawn at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Nationals in July.

The ASSRL Nationals have expanded in 2023, with the Under-18 and Under-15/16 tournaments splitting up following the inclusion of female divisions for the first time.

KommunityTV will be your golden ticket to watch both the Under-18s championships from July 1-7 and the Under-15/16 championships from September 23-29.

The Under-18s championships return to the spiritual home of the Dolphins, with every game played on the surface of Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe.

The ASSRL will break new ground with the introduction of the girl’s championship, which fittingly will be played on the eve of an expanded NRLW season.

The girls’ tournament will include teams from NSW Combined High Schools, NSW Combined Catholic Colleges, NSW Combined Independent Schools, Queensland Secondary Schools, ACT, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

It is not only breaking new ground for the women’s game, but rugby league in general, as the school’s championships extends its reach further into the affiliated states.

The first half of the girls’ tournament will be played in a lightning format, with shortened 20 minute games played across a blistering five-hour window on the Saturday and Monday. The competition will move to 50-minute matches for the finals from Wednesday.

WHO’S EXPECTED TO DO WELL?

The boys’ Under-18 championship will include teams from NSW Combined High Schools, NSW Combined Catholic Colleges, NSW Combined Independent Schools, Queensland Secondary Schools, ACT and Combined Affiliated States.

Queensland will have a lot to prove after their stirring come-from-behind victory in last year’s ASSRL decider against NSW CHS.

The performance was spearheaded by halfback Jye Gray, while two NRL debutants this season in Keano Kini and Karl Oloapu played a major part in the Maroons glory.

But it will be a new-look Queensland side contesting the nationals this season, and there will be a host of hungry players from south of the border determined to take the shield back to NSW.

The Combined Affiliated States will also pack plenty of size and skill this season following the expansion of the Peter Mulholland Cup in Victoria. The competition has opened up more opportunities for players in Victoria to test their mettle against top opposition which should only bode well for a CAS team determined to cause a few upsets in Redcliffe.
