It was a proud day, one that will go down in history.

In Redcliffe State High School’s third season of competing in the Langer Trophy it produced its first-ever win.

A barnstorming one at that, as Mabel Park were trounced 44-6 at Langlands Park.

“It’s a culmination of a lot of extra sessions and hard work really,” said Redcliffe head of football Jay Wilkinson.

“There’s a lot of teachers that have put a lot of time into this program, the boys come in and do their, it’s that. It’s been a while coming and we’re pretty happy with it.

“We knew it would come, it was just a matter of when.

“When you work hard for something and you get it it’s enjoyable.”

Boom second-rower Kaleb Teu starred in the triumph, scoring a hat-trick, and he wasn’t afraid to celebrate either, busting out some dance moves after his second.

Wilkinson said “there was no one better on the field than Amare Wynyard,” who managed a double himself, bursting potently out of dummy half on both occasions.

Cody Starr was also among Redcliffe’s best. The visitors had been chipping away all season but Starr’s return, along with Ethan Yarrow and strike centre Jake Carsburg bolstered their round five line-up significantly.

“When you get to play with those boys it gives you that extra confidence, they’re quality young men and quality players,” Wilkinson said.

“We didn’t see that scoreline coming, but we’ve known for a long time that if they put it together they can achieve anything.

“Mabel’s a great opponent and they’ll bounce back, they’re a great school with a great program and great coaches. We have a lot of respect for them.”

Mabel Park had opened the scoring in the seventh minute through the flying mullet of Elijah Brain. A tussle ensued until the 20-minute mark, before Redcliffe hit back through Seuifalemua Jordan Seauo.

.

Redcliffe scoed at more than a point a minute for remainder of the game as they put on a further two tries before half-time and piled on the pain afterwards, largely thanks to exceptional length-of-the-field runs from Dustin Appo and Logan Hudson.

Payne and Tylah Akai were Redcliffe’s other try-scorers.

It was a special triumph for Redcliffe coach Scott Murray, who works with Wayne Benett at the Dolphins and was Redcliffe’s foundation coach in 2022. He returned this year because he missed the school league program so much.

WALTERS CUP

A hat-trick to Kaleb Teu has helped Redcliffe finally end their winless start to the season in the Langer Trophy.

In their best performance of the season, Redcliffe dominated the contest to beat Mabel Park 44-6.

But it didn’t look like it would happen early.

Mabel Park scored the first try to lead 6-0 and held the lead until the 20 minute mark before Redcliffe produced a wonderful 20-minute display.

The Brisbane-based team scored six tries in 20 minutes to turn a six point deficit into a 26-point lead, 32-6.

From there on Redcliffe controlled the contest to win by 38 points.

Teu wasn’t the only player to impress with Amare Wynyard scoring a double for Redcliffe.

The win moves Redcliffe off the bottom of the ladder.

In the Walters Cup, Mabel Park recorded a comfortable 20-4 victory.

Tall and imposing, Starr is signed by the Dolphins while Yarrow has been a part of the Sunshine Coast Falcons for the last two seasons.

Front-rower Starr is one of four Redcliffe SHS eligible Langer players signed to the Dolphins’ academy – the others are Logan Hudson, Nate Berrigan and Jairus Halahala.

Another player, Ihaia Puohotaua, is with South Sydney.

Leading the way for Mabel Park SHS this season has been Natu Leota who made a big sacrifice last November when he moved to Sydney after Parramatta offered him a chance in their Harold Matthews side.

There were no guarantees, merely an invitation.

So he moved 1000km from his family, friends, a sacrifice which included no more eating his mother’s favourite dish of bacon and egg pie.

But it was a leap of faith Leota knew he had to make.

“Going away and playing in a different competition was a different experience, which helped me grow as a player and person,’’ Leota said.

“There were setbacks and I got dropped for a game, but I came back the next game.

“I learned that you can never get too comfortable in your position, no matter how good you think you are, there is always someone better. So you just have to keep working hard.’’

Mabel Park have won three of their four Langer Trophy games so far in 2024, losing only to Ipswich 22-21 in one of the best Schoolboys games in recent memory.

They showed they can handle pressure as well in their last two games, beating Keebra Park 18-16 and Wavell 24-18.

Redcliffe are yet to open their win account but gave Ipswich a real run for their money just before the break.
