While it was The Grange and Mount Ridley on the right side of the results in round 2 of Storm Cup action, they did it in very different fashions on Thursday.

In back-to-back clashes at Seabrook Reserve, it was The Grange that defeated Victoria University 38-12, while Mount Ridley just knocked off Manor Lakes 22-18 in a tight affair.

It was a dominating first half for The Grange, who led 20-6 at the break, with Vic Uni’s only score coming in the final minutes of the first half.

It took just three minutes for The Grange to respond in the second-half with back-to-back tries in the opening 15 minutes snuffing out any chance of an upset.

Meanwhile, the victory for Mount Ridley was its first of the season, leaving Manor Lakes as the only side without a win.

PREVIEW

Mount Ridley is confident it can end a two-year drought in the Storm Cup but is wary of a desperate Manor Lakes side on the hunt for its first ever finals appearance.

Thursday’s match between the two could determine who finishes fourth and in the last finals spot.

The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a monster Storm Cup double header from Seabrook Reserve along with match between The Grange and Victoria University Secondary College.

The Storm Cup finals make-up is already becoming clear with the top three all-but set in stone. Hallam and Victoria University have already locked in their spots, while The Grange only requires one win from its final two matches to lock up a spot with them.

The final spot in the finals series will fall to either Manor Lakes or Mount Ridley, with Thursday’s head-to-head result to play a massive part in deciding it.

Last year the pair played out a 26-all draw in one of the contests of the season.

The result helped Mount Ridley to make the finals but it left the team feeling hollow afterwards that it missed out on the win.

“If you want to be playing against the best and beating the best you have to win these games put in front of you,” Mount Ridley coach Aaron Neal said.

“You want it to be an expectation (we win).

“Not to take anything away from Manor Lakes.

“But you’ve got to execute what’s in front of you.”

Neal said the focus had been on not getting overawed with the expectation of winning.

He felt last year the team went into its shell a bit during the contest.

I think maybe in the past it has over-awed the team,” Neal said.

“It’s about executing what we are doing in training

“If you can execute your plans and set out the way you want to play you’ll get the results no matter who you play.”

Neal said while the team might not reach the lofty heights of winning the competition this year, it is building towards the future.

Malachai Taupau and Kyu Fiaui are two Mount Ridley players playing for the Melbourne Storm in junior representative football.

Hayden Polley, who has played two games in the halves, has impressed as well, making a try saving tackle during a recent Storm Cup game against Victoria University.

“I feel like we are getting a lot of depth across the park,” Neal said.

“Where everyone can perform a role.

“We’re not getting to the point of picking players because we have to, we’re picking players because that’s the best team we can put out there.

“If you don’t come to training, you are not being picked.

“There’s a culture shift that’s occurring.”

Meanwhile, second spot is on the line between The Grange and Victoria University in the other contest on Thursday.
