WHAT WE LEARNED
GOANNAS CONTINUE TO THRILL
Is anyone going as well as the Goannas?
That’s a question for others to answer but the Goannas are well and truly in the conversation following another impressive performance on Tuesday.
After two very different but equally impressive wins against the NT and Victoria to start the tournament, the ASSRL’s indigenous invitational side looked just as impressive in their 20-0 win over Western Australia to start day 3.
It took just seven minutes for Philip Licence to open their account before back-to-back tries extended the lead to 16-0 at halftime.
Another early try from the Goannas continued to cause headaches for Western Australia, with their frustrations evident throughout a heated second-half.
Frustrations eventually boiled over for both sides and despite young gun Dane Gordon being sent to the sin bin, alongside Western Australia’s Kohbe Dillion, the Goannas had done enough to record a third straight victory and finish atop the Pool B ladder.
QUEENSLAND FIND ANOTHER WAY TO WIN
While a spirited second-half fightback from New South Wales CCC ensured Tuesday’s U16 girl’s semi-final was a vastly different contest than their round 1 meeting, it can be argued Queensland’s 22-12 win was just as impressive.
After easily accounting for their rivals in a 34-0 domination on the opening day, it appeared the Maroons were going to produce a similar result in the early stages of their rematch.
An early try from Indiana Andrews became the catalyst for their early 16-0 lead before a brave CCC produced a brave fightback to rattle the eventual victors back into place.
After Sybella Pike fell just short of converting a strong 10 minutes of defence into their opening try of the day, a patient and considered New South Wales then made their move through Olivia Large.
Some slick ball movement ended with the fleet footed Large crossing the line to open CCC’s account, followed by a successful conversion from Sybella Pike.
Queensland had multiple chances to respond but the combination of Pike and Sienna Brumby continued to keep the underdogs in the contest.
That was no more evident than when the two combined with Ivy Hagan to score a consecutive try and cut the margin back to just 10.
But if the fightback from New South Wales was impressive, the ability for Queensland to regroup on the run and reclaim the momentum through a try from captain Aaliyah Te Mete was just as impressive.
It proved enough for Queensland to hold on despite the inspired second-half New South Wales performance.
CIS PRODUCE MEMORABLE 48 HOUR TURNAROUND
If you’d tipped NSW CHS to secure a comfortable semi-final win on Tuesday, you were probably one of many.
But despite heading in as overriding favourites after knocking off intrastate rivals NSW CIS 36-6 on Monday, those tipsters were made to look silly after the ultimate semi-final upset.
It all began with the opening try of the day, one that came from a terrific catch in the corner from Coco Butcher to get CIS on the board early.
A second minutes later, in the same corner, from Sienna Kennedy-Wilkie extended that lead even further and gave CIS the perfect platform for the upset win.
CHS responded quickly through Lilea Seville at the other end before some pristine link-up attacking ended with Jade Johnston once again finding the line for CIS to give them a 14-4 halftime lead.
A nasty injury to a CHS player halted play in the opening stages of the second-half with the halt in play, and concern for their teammate, appearing to ruffle CHS.
This was evident when Butcher once again found the try line to give CIS a 18-6 lead with another from Charli Hardgrave putting the result well beyond doubt minutes later.
