While he has inherited his dad’s undersized frame, the Haileybury College student has also picked up the same football brain and thirst for knowledge that has made his dad into one of the game’s master tacticians.
Slater has also spent several years around the Queensland Origin set-up with his father, which has clearly rubbed off on him according to his Victorian coaches.
“He is just a ripping kid, he has a really good head on his shoulders,” Victoria coach Hamish Pearce said.
“Like Billy, he is a bit undersized but he has got some really good footy skills and a great footy brain. He will be able to do a job for us.
“You can see with the questions he asks and the responses he gives, his footy IQ is really good. He has definitely been coached well.”
While Slater has been named on the bench to start the tournament, it is expected he will spend plenty of time in the halves for Victoria across the week.
While Billy has been spotted around the Victorian schoolboys training sessions, he has been keeping a hands-off approach to his son’s first representative campaign.
Slater heads up an exciting list of future talents set to show off at the ASSRL Under-15/16s Nationals Championships in Townsville next week.
Check out the full list of players to watch at the tournament below.
Kalani Ford-Stevens (Queensland Maroon)
Ford-Stevens, a rampaging middle forward signed by the Dolphins, took the state championships by storm.
He is a big, powerful and mobile edge or middle forward who takes plenty of stopping in his age group.
Xaviar Vaivai (NSW CHS)
Explosive centre out of Illawarra Sports High who would rather run through his opposite number than around them.
But don’t let his aggressive style fool you, if Vaivai hits the back field, there will be few who have the pace to track him down.
The centre doesn’t have a first or second gear, it’s just full throttle the whole way.
Digby Ioane (Queensland Maroon)
A dynamic centre, Ioane was in a class of his own at the state championships.
He is a blockbusting outside back, very quick when he winds up.
The Brisbane State High student, the nephew of former Wallaby Diby Ioane, gives Queensland plenty of strike power.
Urijah Brown (NSW CIS)
Tipping the scales at a whopping 115kg and standing well over six foot, Brown is a monster on the football field.
The human bulldozer is coming up through the Panthers junior system and will be a welcome addition to the NSW CIS front row.
He is rumoured to have ball skills that defy his size and strength, so he could be setting up just as many tries as he scores.
Taniela Mapapalangi (ACT)
The North Canberra Bears junior is one of the most exciting outside backs prospects in the country.
He has just signed a three-year junior contract with the Brisbane Broncos after apparently catching the eye of several NRL clubs.
Mapapalangi will line up in the centres for the ACT in what is an all-St Edmunds College back five.
Billy Beetson (NSW CIS)
The grandson of legendary Artie Beetson, Billy has had to work hard for his opportunity after missing out on NSWCIS selection last year.
A boom backrower who relishes the physical stuff on field.
Nate Horsey (NSW CHS)
The Endeavour Sports High student is really crafty out of dummy-half with a really strong passing game and sharp footwork.
Has plenty of footy IQ and will be crucial to getting the defending champs onto the front foot on the field.
Dallas Robertson (NT Titans)
The hardworking lock forward only narrowly missed out on selection in the Queensland side, but has opted to run out for his home state.
Was part of last year’s NT ASSRL squad and was scouted to join the Trinity Bay SHS rugby league program in Far North Queensland.
He is a very mobile lock forward and will take the game on from the opening whistle.
Sione Finau (Victoria)
He is a big body, runs hard and defensively very good.
Finau has been playing up an age group for the past 12 months, so will be exciting to see how he goes against kids his own age.
Angus Gordon (NT Titans)
While he remains a bit of an unknown prospect on the field, there is no doubting the heart of the kid from Nhulunbuy.
There isn’t much rugby league played as far north as the Gove Peninsula, but Gordon’s parents took the risk of flying their son in for trials with the NT Titans and he was given an opportunity on the spot.
Will likely shift between front row and backrow throughout the tournament.
Duntae Seufatu (Victoria)
The captain of the Victorian side will lead from the front. His decision making at halfback is really good, and he will step up to manage the game when needed.
Knows how to marshall the team around the park, and will kick rivals into submission.
