After winning a title at the 2023 Sydney International Cup, the girls from Point 1 Football are ready to do it all again.

The field for the U11/12 girls competition has almost doubled this year to 12 teams, but Point 1 coach Caitlin Jarvie said they are excited by the challenge.

“It is a bit daunting because we know everyone plays their best,” Jarvie said.

“But they’re actually excited because they were pretty dominant last year, so it’ll be a challenge for them this year.”

Six teams from the Sydney northern beaches academy are set to take on clubs from across Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney International Cup from Friday.

Point 1 caters to both boys and girls who want to develop their football skills in a professional but fun environment.

As one of only a few academies run by women, Jarvie said participation from girls across all age groups has really grown since it was established only a few years ago.

Can they repeat their 2023 success?

“Definitely one of the key things is I coach boys and girls,” Jarvie said.

“I know a lot of academies will run boys’ classes and they’ll have two or three girls in there, but there has been a massive shift.

“Girls used to want to play with the boys because they thought they were better, but now it’s shifted to ‘girls are just as good, I want to train with girls that I feel comfortable and confident with.’”

Many of the girls set to compete at the Cup with Point 1 have aspirations of a future in football, and Jarvie said this sort of competition is a really good experience for them.

“I think most teams that go to this competition are competitive and are there to win,” she said.

“It’s obviously about their development and enjoyment and being able to get better for their future selves, their future playing career.

“I guess the main thing is having that enjoyment level first so they want to come back, they want to do it again and they want to keep training.”
