A 25-yard screamer just before halftime has set Adelaide City on their way to victory in the Football SA National Premier League Reserves grand final against Adelaide United on Saturday.

With the game very much in the balance, City produced something special to go into the break with the lead. They added a second early in the second half to come away with the title.

Earlier, MetroStars upstaged City in the U18 NPL decider, winning 1-0 on the back of an early goal.

In other results, WT Birkalla overcame Playford City 3-2 in the State League 1 Reserves decider while Adelaide University put in a five-star performance to overwhelm Salisbury United in the State League 2 Reserves game.

South Australia’s most decorated soccer club will look to add another trophy to the cabinet in Saturday’s Football SA NPL Reserves grand final as they remember a club icon who recently passed away.

Adelaide City will take on Adelaide United and aims to leave it all on the pitch in the memory of long-time club servant Charlie Sabatino, who passed away last week.

Seaford, Noarlunga, Blue Eagles, Cumberland, Adelaide Uni, Salisbury, MetroStars, WT Birkalla, Playford City, Adelaide City and Adelaide United are all represented on a massive day of FootballSA grand final action.

“I don’t think we’ll ever find someone like Charlie again, he was a special character and we want to make him proud with our performance against United,” Adelaide City Reserves coach Lewis Vallalonga said.

“The boys want to win something for him, but I told them it’s not about that, we may not win it all in the end, but the important thing will be giving it everything we’ve got for the club, that’s what Charlie would have wanted.”

City has been on a tear in the Reserves competition in the second half of the season, turning an inconsistent start into a 16-game winning streak. They defeated Modbury Jets 6-2 on aggregate to book their spot in the big game with United.

Vallalonga said he was confident his side could get a result against the Reds, who they have already beaten twice this year.

“The boys are very excited, we feel like we’re back where we belong – in the grand final with a shot at winning silverware,” he said.

“We’ve prepared really well, and I’ve been super impressed with the commitment and work ethic of the boys throughout the last couple months.

“United has a lot of brilliant players and they’re a strong side. We know we’ve beaten them twice this season, but this game brings a different environment we need to be ready for.

“I believe the team has the skill, hunger and desire to win the match and I think we can get the result we’re after if we stick to our game and work together.”

Adelaide City will also compete in the U18s NPL grand final, taking on MetroStars on pitch one. Games get underway at 9am with the U18 State league grand finals as Seaford Rangers play Noarlunga United and Adelaide Blue Eagles face Cumberland United.
