South Australia’s best young ballers have a real belief gold is within their grasp.

Top-level prospect Alex Dodson said the confidence within the red brigade was high ahead of the Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships, which starts on January 30.

The Adelaide 36ers development player enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2023, and will be determined to kick off 2024 in the same vein when he takes the court for South Australia in Ballarat.

Every game from the Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV through all of News Corp Australia’s digital mastheads.

Dodson, a Norwood Flames junior, was part of the SA Metro side that finished sixth at last year’s U18 nationals and also took part in the Basketball Australia Schools Championships for Glenunga International College.

Alex Dodson is part of a strong SA squad.

“A combination of factors have gone into my recent development,” Dodson said.

“Training, guidance from coaches, and the experience gained from playing against tough opponents throughout the year.

“Being selected (for the Under-20s) continues the process of development. Myself and my teammates put in a lot of hard work and we realise we need to continue that to give us the best chance for success.

“It feels great to be selected for the U20 side. Representing SA at a national level is an honour and it’s always a great opportunity to learn and play against some of the best players and coaches in Australia.

“I also enjoy catching up with players and staff from interstate who have become friends over the years.”

Spencer Gaze is the nephew of Andrew.

South Australia’s under-20 men’s side will feature the state’s most promising talent, including names like Spencer Gaze – nephew of Boomers legend Andrew – and young gun Lem Ajith.

Dodson said the team would be aiming to go all the way.

“We will be up against some tough competition but, of course, we want to place as high as possible,” he said.

“Our coaching staff will work with us to help us achieve the most we can and as a team we will continue to support each other.

“We’ve played and grown up together for some years now and there’s a strong team spirit and family support base as well.”
