Centrals Districts Lions have withstood the ultimate scare to come away as inaugural champions at the Basketball Australia Under-18 Club Championships.

The South Australians had to grit their teeth in a brutal final quarter as they nearly gave up a 21-point lead to rivals Willetton Tigers.

But in the end it was the work the Lions had done early in the contest, through big man Deng Manyang, which proved decisive in the 76-74 gold medal triumph.

The Tigers, who were crowned WA champions a fortnight ago, gave it their all in a thrilling comeback outscoring the Lions 17-1 in the final quarter.

The front court battle between Manyang and Timothy Ibukunoluwa, two of the premier big men rising through Australia’s junior basketball ranks, was always going to play a major part in the grand final.

In the end it was Manyang who got the better of the engagement, coming up with several huge blocks in the first half to frustrate his rival big.

Diamond Valley Eagles v Dandenong (Boys Bronze medal)

Dandenong Rangers took home the bronze medal in Perth with Austin Foxwell lighting up the court from deep.

Foxwell hit five three-pointers in a personal haul of 24 points as he spearheaded an 81-74 win over Diamond Valley Eagles in the bronze medal match.

GIRLS GOLD MEDAL

Victorian sharpshooter Josie Agnew has inspired the Melbourne Tigers to a domiannt 68-56 win in the girls gold medal match at the Basketball Australia Under-18 Club Championships.

Agnew set the tone in the gold medal match against local hopefuls Perry Lakes Hawks, with a series of three-point bombs in the opening quarter.

While Agnew might have done all the damage early, and topped the point scorers tally for the match with 17 points, it was Vic Country teammate Krystal Arnason (11 points) who drove home the Tigers adavantage.

Isobelle Wightman (15 points) and Alice Magnanini (14 points) also played crucial roles in the grand final triumph.

The gold medal win caps off a perfect week in the west for the Victorian champions, who were faultless across the tournament.

The Perry Lakes Hawks fought valiantly and finished deserved silver medallists on home soil with Emma Clark and Allira Fotu leading the charge for the Hawks.

West Adelaide v Sandringham (Girls Bronze medal)

Sandringham Sabres finished their tournament on the right foot with a 59-55 bronze medal triumph over West Adelaide Bearcats.

It was a briliant fight back from the Sabres, who trailed by as many as eight points deep in the third quarter.

It’s medal time at the Basketball Australia U18 Club Championships - and it could be a huge day for the locals on Sunday.

Both teams in the boys decider are from Western Australia while Perry Lakes Hawks will be looking to upstage interstate heavyweights Melbourne Tigers in the girls.

The boys gold medal decider features Central Districts Lions and Willetton Tigers after both emerged victorious over their Victorian opponents.

A 19-point haul from Bryce Sanders proved pivotal in the Lions’ 63-50 success over Diamond Valley Eagles.

And in one of the best games of the tournament, Willetton edged out Dandenong Ranges 71-70 on the back of 22 points from Harrison Fitzgerald.

That means Austin Foxwell, Edward Brammel and co must now play of in an all-Victorian bronze medal playoff.

In the girls, the Tigers beat West Adelaide Bearcats 63-51, while the Hawks, who beat Norths Bears in the quarters, added another interstate scalp to their collection in beating Sandringham Sabres 66-58.
