He is the board-crashing, big dunk making teenager ready to make sure the national title stays in the west.

Willetton Tigers young gun Josh Ibukunoluwa will return to Victoria in January, determined to steer a new-look Western Australia side to back-to-back Under-20s titles.

Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-20s National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and News Corp Australia mastheads from January 30-February 4.

The boys in yellow were unstoppable in Geelong back in February, when they blasted New South Wales off the court in a 37-point grand final drubbing.

But the Western Australia side which will look to defend that title will be without some of the tournament’s top players including Ben Henshall, Alex Kovatchev and Alex Condon.

Ibukunoluwa is one of only two players who remain from the 2023 gold medal winning squad along with Willetton Tigers teammate Blake Fido.

Several players will make the step up from the Western Australia Under-18 ranks including an exciting wing Bob Griechen from Geraldton.

The young guard has gotten valuable experience playing in the NBL1 West for the Buccaneers this season, and will only improve after averaging more than 16 points per game at the 2023 Under-18 National Championships.

Roman Lutton, who exploded onto the scouting scene at the Under-18 championships at Brisbane averaging the third-best points per game haul (21.12ppg), will also make the step up into the Under-20s squad.

While Australian representatives Ruby Vlahov and Jayda Clark have moved on from the national championships set-up, the Western Australia women’s squad will have a strong backbone of experience.

Young trio Kyana Weir, Harriet Ford and Grace Foster will all return for the Under-20s championships after playing as bottom-agers at last year’s tournament.

AUSSIE POWERHOUSE PULLING ON SKY BLUE AGAIN

New South Wales is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for back-to-back gold medals in the women’s Under-20 National Championships.

The sky blues have named a dominant line-up for the tournament in Ballarat, including a host of returning superstars headlined by Sydney Flames WNBL young gun Isla Juffermans.

Juffermans was a class above at the U20 nationals last year, guiding NSW to the gold medal and finishing as tournament MVP.

The North Coast product finished the tournament averaging 15.14 points and 10.43 rebounds per game.

Juffermans is not the only player set to return from last year’s gold medal squad with fellow Flames development player Caitlyn Martin named as well as Manly-Warringah young gun Meera Coburn.

They will be joined in the side by Basketball Australia Centre of Execellence recruit, and U17 Oceania Cup champion Opal Bird.

TERRITORIES TEAM UP TO TAKE ON NATION

The best young athletes from Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory will join forces, but the move will have to wait 12 months before coming to fruition.

The Territories joint venture has already announced an initial extended squad of Darwin athletes to train as part of the program with Canberra and Alice Springs/Central Australia squads to be picked at a later date following trials.

The Northern Territory and ACT have both struggled to compete with the top states at the national titles, with the tyranny of a smaller pool of talent to draw from a key factor.

Northern Territory also failed to register a women’s team at last year’s championships due to a lack of available athletes.

Basketball NT high performance and development manager Rod Tremlett said the move would strengthen the pathways for young Territory athletes.

“This is a great opportunity for the Northern Territory to secure consistent opportunities for our athletes on the Basketball Australia pathway, particularly in those years where our representative numbers at the U20 age group can be under pressure due to athlete unavailability that can occur in this age demographic for a number of reasons,” he said.

“For those Northern Territory athletes who are dedicated to working towards potential collegiate, NBL1 and/or WNBL and NBL opportunities, securing this arrangement ensures that regardless of the total numbers we have available, athletes will still have the opportunity to represent at the U20 Championships and access the significant interest that the Tournament attracts.

“In particular, this will provide a great opportunity for our female athletes where at times it has been difficult to produce teams meaning that our available NT talent miss out on the potential opportunity to represent.”

Already states are pulling together their squads ahead of the Summer season, with both Victoria and Tasmania naming star-studded line-ups.

Victoria’s top men’s squad will be led by Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence guard Luke Fennell and features exciting Knox duo Fraser Roxburgh and Austin Rapp as well as lights-out shooter Joel Foxwell.

There is also plenty of Centre of Excellence talent in the Victorian women’s side with Australian junior representative Sienna Harvey, Sarah Portlock, Bonnie Deas all donning the ‘Big V’ along with WNBL young guns Manuela Puoch and Paige Burrows.

The Tasmanian men’s side features plenty of exciting talent including NBA Global Academy wing Jacob Furphy and workhorse point-guard Kye Savage.
