“This is our first major open basketball championship as a school, we’re very much new to it all and we’re heading in as a dark horse,” Glenunga International HS coach Sam Woolley said.

“We’re a bit of an unknown commodity – we’re a public school in SA which doesn’t usually compete at this level of the sport.

“We probably weren’t expected to win the state championship, but we’ve gained a lot of confidence from that. We’re definitely primed and ready because we’re in a similar position now.”

Woolley’s side established itself as a defensive juggernaut at the state level, something he will be looking for his team to continue on the national stage.

He believed his side had the talent and togetherness to go deep in the tournament.

“We’ve got some high profile athletes, including Alex Dickeson, who has represented Australia and is an All-Australian, but the buy-in from the group has really been key,” he said.

“We’ve been very good defensively and shown a lot of togetherness on that end of the floor to really clamp teams down.”

While Woolley believed developing the players would be the most important part of the tournament, he also stressed Glenunga wouldn’t just be there to “make up the numbers.”

“Obviously, development is really important because we’re a relatively young team, but we’re not just there for the sake of it, we want to go all the way,” he said.

“It’d mean a lot to the school and to the boys, who have been so committed.

“I’ve coached them for three years now and I’m proud of what they’ve achieved so far.”
