Forestville basketball development manager Tom Hilbig said the amount of SA sides in the championships represented how far the state had come in developing junior talent.

“The standard of SA teams vying for U14 club championship qualification was very high this year and, by no means, was it a certainty for either of our teams,” Hilbig said.

“It’s an exciting time for the club to have both boys and girls competing and great exposure for them on the national stage.

“Commitment to development and a positive player experience underpins our core values as a club and we are so fortunate to have coaches who buy into that philosophy, not just at U14 level, which sets up our players for success.”

Forestville has a number of young guns developing through the ranks who will be showcased on the national stage from Sunday, including playmaking leaders in Henry Riddle, Lucas Breeding and Atrina Zand.

Hilbig said every player from a SA club would benefit from the experience.

Forestville will be one of three SA girls teams in Melbourne.

“This will be most athletes’ first time experiencing a week-long national tournament, and there’s a unique element of preparation and resilience required to be successful in this environment,” he said.

“Every team competing will experience adversity in some form over the course of the championships, which provides an opportunity for individual growth and building camaraderie.

“We have strong contributors across the board at Forestville and our athletes will be aiming to represent themselves, their team, and Forestville Eagles to the best of their ability.

“Success at the U14 Club Championships so often comes down to winning crucial games, but I‘m confident in how our teams will perform. They’ve put in the work all year and are pumped for the opportunity to reap the rewards.”
