Collegians coach Jordie McKenzie isn’t afraid to say his side still has “a long way to go”.

An upset of reigning premier Old Scotch last round brought the Lions’ season to life but now he’s hoping to see more.

Sitting at 1-2, McKenzie is aware of the challenges Steven Alessio’s St Bernard’s will present this weekend in a huge VAFA Premier Men’s clash.

The game will be live streamed on KommunityTV on Saturday starting with the reserves at 11.40am followed by the seniors at 2pm.

If the Lions win, they’ll even the ledger alongside the Snowdogs at 2-2 or potentially fall off the pace in a bid for top-four place early in the season with a loss.

“It was what we needed (against Old Scotch) and obviously we would’ve gone in as massive underdogs but it was a real back against the wall performance,” McKenzie said.

“It was a great reward for the boys. We know we’ve had a big pre-season and it’s going to do a lot for our confidence.

“I think we’ve already seen enough from three games and practice matches, including ourselves and other results, you need to be on every week if you’re going to win games of footy.

“Hopefully now we’re in a position to kick start our year.”

McKenzie admitted he had been “disappointed” in his side’s 74-point loss to Old Haileybury to start the season but was pleased with an improved effort against Uni Blues.

In the lead up to the win over the Cardinals, McKenzie made seven changes and said he was hoping for more consistency with selection this week.

“No major changes thankfully but we’re still working through a couple of things,” he said.

McKenzie spoke of his club’s “high level” of respect for St Bernard’s and said he was expecting a tough contest.

“A good contested footy side,” he said.

“Even if you’re one per cent off, they have the quality to make you pay.”
