Hectorville has caused a premiership boilover in the SANFL Juniors under 18 division one girls decider, with a last-quarter goal delivering rivals Tea Tree Gully their first and only loss of 2024.
Hectorville, who finished the regular season fourth with a 9-4 record, caught fire in the finals series, their three wins coming at an average 64-point winning margin heading into Sunday’s grand final against minor premier, Tea Tree Gully.
That momentum proved crucial for the Hounds, though they struggled to capitalise early with more scoring shots at Maughn Thiem Kia Oval to trail by three points at half time, and one at the final break.
But in a brilliant passage of play midway through the fourth quarter, Elke Cameron became a premiership hero, receiving the handpass from teammate Matilda Margitich in the right pocket before quicking putting the ball on her right to snap it through for a flag-winning goal, 2.3 (15) to 2.8 (20).
Port District capped off the perfect season, winning the under 17.5 division one boys premiership in commanding fashion over Tea Tree Gully.
The Ditters took less than a minute to kick their first goal against the Gullies on Thebarton Oval, before controlling the game from start to finish, 12.11 (83) to 3.6 (24).
Undefeated in the regular season, Port District easily won their qualifying final to progress to the decider.
Meanwhile, it was the final game of the day which delivered up one of the tensest deciders, with Colonel Light Gardens kicking four final quarter goals in the span of about eight minutes to defeat Lockleys in the under 16 division two final.
Just one point separated the two sides with 10 minutes left on the clock, before Lockleys managed a major score to mount a seven-point buffer on Maughn Thiem Kia Oval.
But it was then the Lions went on their run, kicking four goals in a row, including two from Oliver Roberts, to race out to a 17-point lead.
The Demons managed one late to pull it back to 11 before the final siren went.
