Sandingham will be disappointed with the round 12 result, but only have themselves to blame.

Atrocious kicking, including 5.12 in the second half, denied the Dragons any chance of getting back into the contest.

The Devils caught their more credentialled rivals flatfooted from the outset as they raced to 48-point lead at the main break after kicking nine goals in the first half. A sluggish Sandringham could only manage one.

After the main break, Sandringham lifted their workrate with renewed vigor but despite their territory gain they couldn’t impact effectively on the scoreboard.

Countless inside 50 penetrations amounted to just five goals, with the Tasmanian defence holding firm despite wave after wave.

Anthony Volta finished with three goals for the home side, with Jack Miller and Charlie Bovill, with two each, the only other multiple goalkickers.

Sandringham girls have continued to rise up the ladder with a convincing 33-point win over an outclassed Tasmania Devils at Girdlestone Park.

Holding a slender one-point lead at halftime, the Dragons have roared to life in the second half, kicking five goals to none, to run away with the contest.

With winners on every line, Sandringham had all the answers and grew in confidence as the contest wore on.

The gifted Maya Duane enjoyed a good day with two goals and also brought others into the game.

Molly Allan and Izabela Ignjic also kicked two goals apiece for the winners.

For the Devils, Matilda Lange and Georgia McTee each kicked a goal.

PREVIEW

The Tasmania Devils boys are bracing themselves for another tough challenge when they come up against one of the best academy pathways in the country.

Travelling to Devonport, the Devils will host the Sandringham Dragons on Sunday and will be looking to bounce back from the loss to Dandenong Stingrays on May 31.

You can watch both the girls and boys matches between the Devils and the Dragons live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 10.30am.

Devils coach Jeromey Webberley said the Dragons pose a big challenge.

“They are a highly talented program with clearly a lot of really talented players, this time of the year, going in and out of their program on any given week,” Webberley said.

“But clearly they’re a highly skilled, highly talented team, which makes it a really exciting opportunity.

“Most of our boys are available this week so I feel like we’ve got a really strong squad leading into this weekend’s game.”

Across the 18-team boys competition, the Devils sit 15th with three wins and five losses but sit equal with GWV Rebels, Bendigo Pioneers, Geelong Falcons and Murray Bushrangers as well as just one win behind Oakleigh, Northern Knights and the Dragons.

“It is a very even competition at the moment in terms of I had a look at the ladder today and there’s a lot of teams around that sort of 3-5, 4-4, 5-3 situations,” Webberley said.

“So the competition is very even and clearly the Coates League landscape is very much an unknown throughout the course of the year.

“You’ve got APS footy over there in Melbourne and they’ve got National Academy players and you’ve got national championship games coming up.

“So there is a lot of chopping and changing of personnel between every program as such, so the competition does sort of stay pretty even through the first sort of three quarters of the year and then on the back end of the year, when school programs in the mainland slow down and the national championships have concluded, you start to get a real indication around who the form teams are in the competition.

“We feel like even though we are 3-5, we feel like we’ve been outsiders. We feel like we have been super competitive in all games.

“Sandringham are a highly talented team, high offence talent, so it’s about slowing their ball movement down.

“Their defence is really stable, so around the stoppage and the contest, they like to flick it around by handball, very similar to the Western Bulldogs.

“We’re going to have to make sure our tackle pressure and ability to stick the tackles in that area of the ground is really good and we own the outside of the contest.”
