Moranbah State High will bring a small army north to Townsville, while senior boys powerhouse St Augustine’s College will be determined to go back-to-back as the AFL Queensland Schools Cup North Queensland finals kick off.

The regional finals, which double as part of the wider AFL Queensland Schools Cup statewide finals series, will be contested across two days at Townsville’s Riverway Stadium.

KommunityTV will stream all 24 matches across two fields of action, as the best school Aussie rules talents in regional Queensland battle to be crowned champions.

Regional champions from Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns will contest the finals series which features games in senior (U18), youth (U15) and junior (U11) age groups across boys and girls.

Moranbah State High has emerged as a top breeding ground for Aussie rules talent in the region with the school sending teams to compete in five of the six possible divisions.

The Mackay juggernaut will clash with Townsville’s St Margaret Mary’s College in both the youth female and junior female preliminary finals, while they will also feature in both senior divisions against Kirwan State High in the senior female and Ryan Catholic College in the senior male finals.

Reigning senior boys champions St Augustine’s College will fly the flag for the Far North once again, and will be determined to book their spot at the statewide finals later this year.

St Augustine’s College will clash with Yeppoon powerhouse St Brendan’s College in Monday’s preliminary final stage.

Rockhampton’s The Cathedral College, who took out last year’s senior female title in a last-minute thriller, will also look to go back-to-back when they face off against St Monica’s College in the preliminary final stage.

The NQ championships are the first event of a statewide search for the best AFL schools in Queensland, with other state finals events to be live streamed on KommunityTV.

Head of AFL Queensland and International Trisha Squires said the AFLQ Schools Cup had grown exponentially in recent years.

“2025 looks set to be another record breaking year for our StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup Competition, with more than 800 schools participating,” she said.

“We are so excited to see the best schools in North Queensland showcase their skills and ability.

“We thank Townsville City Council and all AFL Queensland staff, students, teachers, parents and administrators for supporting this year’s championships.”
