IT has been dubbed the greatest upset in sporting history, but a win for Leicester City could also lead to one of the biggest combined payouts ever.

WHEN Leicester City take the field at Old Trafford on Sunday, there will be far more than just the Premier League title on the line.

Leicester are poised to become first-time Premier League champions if they manage to beat fifth placed Manchester United at 11pm on Sunday (AEST), which would push them 10 points clear of Tottenham Hotspur who sit a close second.

An underdog story of momentous proportions, the Foxes sit top of the table in just their second year back in the major league, winning promotion for the 2014-15 season after 10 years in the second and third level competitions.

Finishing 14th in 2015, Leicester held near impossible odds to take out the title in 2016 — but as they have proved, nothing is impossible.

Leicester’s run to become champions has been dubbed one of the greatest sporting upsets in history.

TAB reported odds as high as 2001-1 for the Foxes to win the League, which thanks to the keen nose of a few savvy punters, could lead to the “biggest loss on a sporting event ever” for the betting organisation.

TAB is set to lose more than $1 million if Leicester City beat Man United on Sunday and clinch the title, with some punters set to collect as much as $40,000 each.

“The only thing more incredible than the Leicester City success is how many Nostradamus like punters had the foresight to have a bet on them at such huge odds,” TAB’s Nick Quinn said.

The largest individual payout for the match is scheduled for $40,020 to a punter that risked just $20 at odds of 2001-1.

Another punter is set to take home just over $10,000 after placing a bet that likely cost them less than their lunch that day — $5 at 2001-1.

Despite jumping on the bandwagon slightly later, another keen fan is set to win as much as $30,020 on $20 bet, at still incredible odds of 1501-1.

However not everyone will be celebrating if Leicester win on Sunday.

One TAB member was set to win just over $100,000 after placing a wager of $100 at 1001-1 on the Foxes to win the championship. Unfortunately they cut their losses and chased out for just $6000. And while a prize of 60 times your original bet is nothing to turn your nose up at, it would be hard not to think about the glory had they backed Leicester to the very end.

One big winner has already cashed out a $50 bet at 1001-1 for a whopping $27,015, while another wasn’t so lucky, going home with just $65 after betting $1 with the same odds.

If Claudio Ranieri’s men can secure the three points against Manchester United, they will create history as just the sixth club to hold the Premier League title since the competition’s inception in 1992.

Win, lose or draw, there will no doubt be plenty of emotion bubbling come Sunday.
