Premier trainer Tony Gollan capped off a 24 hours to remember with a five-win haul at Eagle Farm on Saturday to extend his already unassailable premiership stranglehold.

The winning five-peat came hot on the heels of a red-letter night at the Gold Coast on Friday when securing a winning double at the lucrative Magic Millions meeting courtesy of Zarastro and Hidden Wealth.

Gollan’s five winners on Saturday came via Habeebah, Hurts So Good, Kronenbourg, About To Explode and Torabella to make it 61 metropolitan winners for 2024/25 and keep him in the hunt for another record breaking season.

“We came here today with a good team and a number of really strong chances so to see them perform as highly as they have is really pleasing,” Gollan said.

Included among Gollan’s winners was progressive type About To Explode which lived right up to his name to take out the Ladbrokes Racing Club Plate (1200m).

The four-year-old Spirit Of Boom gelding launched down the outside under the urgings of Angela Jones who chalked up a winning double after scoring on Habeebah earlier in the program.

“I was a bit worried about the tempo of today’s race but he showed he’s a really progressive horse with a nice future,” Gollan said.

“Watching the race I thought he might have got a pair or two further back then we would have liked but with the way the track is playing Angela got him to the right spot and he let down like a really nice horse.

“The plan is to work him through the grades at this time of year and let him furnish into himself.

“By the spring I think we’ll see a really good horse. He’s quite progressive.”

Gollan’s day out at Eagle Farm followed Friday night’s Magic Millions double with Zarastro landing the MM Snippets while Hidden Wealth took out the MM QTIS Open.

But while Gollan was ecstatic with both wins, he was equally caught up in the effort by Hi Barbie in the 2YO Classic where she finished an eye-catching sixth behind winner O’ Ole.

“I might be biased but I thought she was the run of the race,” Gollan said.

“She went terrific. When you looked at them all in the yard she was the scopy filly with all the room for improvement.

“She’s a very good reason to get out of bed in the morning as we get closer to carnival time.”
