Racing SA has appointed Nick Bawden as its new chief executive officer.

Bawden will assume the role on February 1, 2025, taking over from outgoing CEO Vaughn Lynch, who resigned from the role in October.

Bawden, who has served as Racing SA’s general manager of operations since 2022, joined Racing SA as industry operations and welfare manager in 2010 after holding an executive position at the Moonee Valley Racing Club.

“We are delighted that Nick has accepted this critical role. As an integral member of our management team, he has made remarkable contributions that have driven our business forward,” Racing SA Chairman Rob Rorrison said.

“Over the past year, he and the team achieved significant milestones, including:

• Successfully negotiating a seven-year, industry-wide wagering sponsorship with Sportsbet, resulting in $1 million prizemoney for our Group 1 races;

• Managing our horse population growth strategy, making South Australia the number one-ranked state in Australia for field size, which is essential for our financial sustainability;

• Collaborating with our clubs to develop a 10-year infrastructure plan and securing increased funding for vital industry infrastructure; and

• Finalising a media rights agreement with Racing.com, ensuring South Australian racing is represented on all platforms across Australia and globally.”

Bawden credited the work of Lynch and said he was hoping to grow participation in the industry.

“I am excited to lead our industry and build on the great work of Vaughn Lynch. My vision is to enhance the vibrancy of our racing community, making participation – whether through work, volunteering, training, riding, wagering, or ownership – more appealing,” Bawden said.

“Thoroughbred racing is vital to South Australian culture and our growing economy. Together, we will create a more sustainable and inclusive future for racing in SA.”

Lynch, who is taking on a new role as Racing Victoria’s chief operating officer, reflected on his time as Racing SA CEO with pride after two years at the helm.

“It has been a privilege to serve as CEO of Racing SA. I am proud of our collective achievements and I am confident that Nick will elevate the industry and team to new heights,” Lynch said.

“I look forward to supporting him during this transition and wish him the very best.”
