Elson Boy can become the nation’s most “winningest” horse this season by taking out the TAB Handicap (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

The “Dubbo Dasher” has won eight of his 15 starts during 2023-24 including a Country Championships Qualifier at Coonamble, Diggers Cup (Narromine), Gooree Cup (Mudgee) and metropolitan wins at the Scone stand-alone meeting and Rosehill.

The only other horse to win eight races in Australia this season is the Gold Coast-trained sprinter Avenue Of Stars who has won five races on the Gold Coast Poly Track, plus wins at Gatton, Grafton and Murwillumbah.

Speed Legend, Stone Cold Stunner, Bondi Bubbles and Wings Of Song have all won seven races. Multiple Group 1 winners Imperatriz and Riff Rocket won six races.

Trainer Dar Lunn was considering spelling Elson Boy after the sprinter’s six-race winning streak came to an end when second to Contemporary at Randwick earlier this month but the gelding did too well after that narrow loss.

“When we got home after that race, Elson Boy just continued to thrive, he has done everything right and I can’t fault him,’’ Lunn said. “He enjoys these winter tracks, he’s very fit and this looked a suitable race.’’

Elson Boy, with apprentice Chelsea Hillier retaining the ride, is at $5.50 in early TAB Fixed Odds betting for the Rosehill race behind Chorlton Lane at $2.50.

Lunn said “win, lose or draw” he planned to give Elson Boy a break after Saturday’s race and then aim the rising five-year-old at the $2 million The Kosciuszko (1200m) at Royal Randwick on The Everest Day, October 19.

“I will give him two or three weeks off after Saturday’s race then hopefully we can get him into The Kosciuszko,’’ Lunn said.

“I’m thinking of giving him two barrier trials then having one race into The Kosciuszko. I want to keep the freshness in his legs if he gets selected.’’
