Jamie Melham has become the first woman in history to claim the coveted Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double after piloting Half Yours to victory in the race that stops the nation.
Melham surged clear in the final 200m to join Michelle Payne, who was reduced to tears, as the only women to win the Melbourne Cup in the iconic race’s 165-year history.

“When a horse is just travelling that well, it didn’t matter what size the gaps were, he just wanted to ride him as quiet as I could. And at the 400 I couldn’t go any quieter. I had to let him go and this horse was so fit and strong. The team have just prepared him,” Melham said.
Land Legend threw down the gauntlet with another 1000m left, racing 7-8 lengths clear of the field in a sign of intent from hoop Joao Moreira.
But his horse ultimately ran out of gas and Melham took her chance as a large wall of horses rounded the field together.
Goodie Two Shoes looked the likely winner with about 300m to run before Melham found a gap on the inside and Half Yours unleashed a decisive burst.
“It’s just so fitting because she is such such an unbelievable rider and we really saw that today and just look at those celebrations, people. She’s come through the riding ranks with Kelvin and Tony McEvoy,” Payne said on Channel 9.
