Alegron has emerged as a spring staying prospect after jumping out of the ground for his new trainer Bjorn Baker, producing a last to first Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) romp at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The former Godolphin galloper was sold online for $40,000 in November last year needing a throat operation, however, connections are now daring to dream of the first Tuesday in November after a dominant staying performance.

Baker is in London preparing for jockey Rachel King’s wedding, however was still able to put the cherry on top of a winter campaign for the stayer.

Race favourite Mostly Cloudy was desperately unlucky, as jockey Blake Shinn searched for runs up the inside before getting out late.

In a drama-filled affair, the Paul Preusker-trained Captain Envious held on to run third after surviving a protest from the fourth-placed Warning, however jockey Mark Zahra reported the horse broke down after the finish line.

It was Dylan Gibbons that produced the winning ride, with Baker’s stable representative Jim Clark saying a spring campaign was now in store for the five-year-old.

“He’s been a fantastic horse since Bjorn bought him relatively inexpensively,” Clark said.

“He’s had a really good prep and his run the other day put the writing on the wall.

“They were very confident he’d be strong at the end of two miles. They ran along nicely and it was a really cool ride from Dylan. Great result.

“Each run he has kept improving physically. I thought he looked a million dollars today. Stepping up to the two miles is the key.

“(The Melbourne Cup) It’d be a great story — an online purchase and one that could get to a Melbourne Cup after a wind operation. Bjorn has had very good luck with that.”

Gibbons said the son of Teofilo relished the step up in trip suggested he would be a serious player over two miles.

“I only had to think for about 400-metres so it was great,” he said.

“ His run the other day was enormous and he took me into the race. I just had to give him that good 400-metres and I knew he’d be tough for me late and he had to be.

“I had a look back through his form and he’d won over 2800-metres so Bjorn isn’t afraid to get him out (in distance).”
