There is plenty of star power across SA’s regional footy leagues. We’ve listed the overall best players for 2023 so far. See who made the cut.

From the Yorke Peninsula to the Spencer Gulf, and from the Hills to the River Murray, SA’s country football leagues are bursting with top drawer talent.

Based on this season’s form and with the input of league insiders, we’ve ranked the top players in the competition for 2023.

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

10. SAM LAWRIE

(McLaren)

A versatile tall who can play around the ground and have an impact, Lawrie has been a standout for the Eagles yet again this season.

One of the competition’s most competitive rucks, Lawrie sets up McLaren’s stacked midfield with elite tap work and can also play up front or behind the footy.

Had four best player nods in his eight games this year.

9. ZIGGY VITKUNAS

(Mount Compass)

Vitkunas remains one of the best forwards and contested players in the competition and has dominated for Mount Compass yet again in 2023.

The Bulldogs veteran provides a strong body up front and through the middle and has a brilliant goal-sense, booting 15 goals in eight games so far.

Has been named among his side’s best five times already.

8. RILEY CLAMP

(Strathalbyn)

An athletic and reliable centre half-forward, Clamp has impressed for Strathalbyn so far this season while also performing well for Adelaide in the SANFL.

The Roosters gun can slot goals from anywhere and has been a much-needed target up front for his side, often drawing major opposition attention and opening up opportunities for teammates.

Has 15 goals in four GSFL appearances so far including a seven-goal performance against Langhorne Creek.

7. JAYDEN SCOTT

(Myponga/Sellicks)

One of many young guns at Myponga/Sellicks, Scott has been one of the most improved players in the GSFL this year.

Turning just 20 years of age this month, Scott is already one of the best forwards in the GSFL.

A supreme athlete with a big leap and the ability to take huge marks, Scott is adept at playing as a key target or moving up the ground to create for teammates.

Currently sits second for goals in the league with 28 in eight games to go along with five best player nods.

6. SAM OVERALL

A major signing for the Roos this season, Overall has been dominant since returning to his hometown club after a strong career with South Adelaide.

A tall and athletic forward who moves well up the ground for link-up play and can also apply his trade through the middle, Overall boasts a strong set of hands, a brilliant field kick and the ability to finish efficiently in front of goal.

Has five best player mentions and 15 goals in seven games.

5. SAM KENNEDY

The brother of fellow Myponga/Sellicks gun Ben Kennedy, Sam has been a force so far in season 2023 to follow on from a strong 2022 campaign.

Kennedy is a big body in the contest who has a big motor, wins plenty of the footy and applies strong tackle pressure.

He can also move up the ground to hit the scoreboard, booting six goals in seven games so far to go along with five best player mentions.

4. JESSE MCKINNON

McKinnon has been a star for Victor Harbor yet again in season 2023 after a spectacular 2022 for the club.

The former South Adelaide man and current Roos captain is a hardworking, big-bodied midfielder who fights through tackles to distribute to teammates and has been his side’s top winner of contested footy.

Has six best player nods in his eight games so far this season.

3. JACK REDDEN

(Willunga)

Finishing sixth in the West Coast Eagles’ AFL best and fairest count last season, Redden became one of the biggest signings in local SA footy by joining Willunga heading into 2023.

A contested beast who accumulates the footy with ease in the midfield and distributes seamlessly by hand.

The 31-year-old has only played four games so far this year but should be a major factor toward the business end of the season as the Demons look to bounce back from last year’s grand final loss.

2. BRETT ELLIS

(McLaren)

Ellis won his third consecutive Mail Medal for McLaren last season and should go close again this year if he can continue his promising form.

A crafty onballer who always seems to find the ball and create space for himself or teammates, Ellis has been the major key to the Eagles’ remarkable undefeated run.

Has six goals and four best player nods in eight games so far.

1. BEN KENNEDY

Winner of the coaches award last season, Kennedy has picked up where left off for the Mudlarks this year, dominating up front and pinch-hitting through the middle to great effect.

The former Melbourne and Collingwood man is a supreme athlete who is strong in the contest and possesses top drawer skills by hand and foot.

Has 18 goals and three best player performances in seven games played so far and will again be a favourite for the GSFL Mail Medal.

RIVER MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

10. AIDAN COAKLEY

One of the competition’s star recruits in the pre-season, the former Christies Beach captain has led by example for Tailem Bend so far in 2023.

A hard-running midfielder who always finds plenty of the footy win or lose, Coakley has been the Eagles’ most consistent player.

Has five best player appearances and five goals in his seven games this year.

9. SAM SANDERS

(Coorong)

A strong midfielder who shows grit and determination in the contest, Sanders has the ability to win plenty of ball on the inside while putting his running ability to use on the outside.

Sanders has also been playing a lead-up forward role for the Cats and possesses a strong set of hands.

Has booted 24 goals in seven games so far including an 11-goal display against Rambler.

8. LOUIS DE MICHELE

(Imperials)

The competition’s top ruckman, De Michele has started this season in hot form after a fantastic 2022 campaign.

Extremely mobile for his size and an aerobic beast who never stops running, De Michele feeds his midfielders with ease and reads the play as well as anyone to take big intercept marks.

Has eight best player appearances in his eight games so far.

7. JOSH SMITHSON

(Southern Mallee)

The Adelaide Crows SANFL-listed gun was a huge coup for the Suns in the pre-season and has been a standout so far this season.

The former Karoonda player is a no-fuss ball-winner who racks up countless possessions as a big-bodied midfielder.

Has six best player nods and 10 goals in his seven games this year.

6. ALEX PFEIFFER

(Rambler)

Pfeiffer has been a star in the RMFL for years at Rambler and remains a flexible key position player for his club.

Has the ability to move up front but does his best work behind the ball, picking off opposition attacks and shutting down the opposition’s best forwards.

Pfeiffer has three goals and five best player nods in seven games so far, and has the Roosters contending for finals.

5. TOM KEOUGH

(Southern Mallee)

The former West Adelaide captain and Gold Coast- listed player has been the perfect player to lead the Southern Mallee Suns’ debut season in the RMFL.

The Suns captain is one of the most versatile players in the competition and has the ability to play behind the ball, in the contest or up front.

A strong and explosive player who possesses elite skills, Keough has 21 goals in seven appearances and has been his side’s best on two occasions.

4. HARLEY MONTGOMERY

(Imperial)

A smooth-moving midfielder with the ability to consistently win the ball and break through the contest, Montgomery continues to produce at an elite level for Imperials.

Last year’s Mail Medallist has been one of the keys to his club’s 6-2 start this year, dominating through the middle through his eight performances so far.

He has picked up four best player nods in his eight games.

3. BEN HANSEN

(Jervois)

Hansen has transitioned into the River Murray FL’s top goalkicker so far this season, booting 26 goals in six games to sit level with Imperials’ Johnny Boras.

Playing further back during his time at Tailem Bend, Hansen has been the key target in Jervois’ forwardline this year and has produced in every game he has played.

A strong player in the air and on the ground who is unstoppable one-on-one and possesses elite foot skills, Hansen has three best player nods to go with his 26 goals.

2. JOSH SCOTT

(Jervois)

One of the best forwards in SA country footy, former Glenelg star Josh Scott remains among the top RMFL players this season.

Scott has played a different role up front this season with Ben Hansen emerging as a major goal threat, instead moving up the ground more often to impact the contest and set up Hansen consistently.

Has 13 goals in six games and four best player performances for the Bluds, but may miss time for an extended period after picking up a broken jaw in round six.

1. JACK PENFOLD

(Imperials)

Penfold has been a star for Imperials since joining from Sturt in 2022 and has taken his game to another level so far this season.

The Double Blues gun has a big motor, is strong on the ball and can move forward to hit the scoreboard for the side.

Has 14 goals in his eight games and has been named among Imps’ best six times this season, including in a recent two-goal display from the middle against Jervois.

YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

10. LUKE TRENORDEN

(Central Yorke)

A star ruck who can also play up front, Trenorden has arguably been Central Yorke’s best player so far this season.

Trenorden provides a big presence in the contest or in the forwardline and has the ability to take a number of strong contested marks in each outing.

Has six goals and four best player mentions in his seven games.

9. GILES ELLIS

(Kadina)

Ellis is one of the Bloods’ most versatile players, performing consistently as a midfielder who can also have an impact off of halfback.

The multiple state country representative has impressive leg speed and has remained one of the best distributors in the YPFL.

Ellis has five goals and four best player mentions in his six games so far in 2023.

8. MALCOLM KARPANY

(Moonta)

One of the top players in the YPFL last season and the best player on the park during Moonta’s winning 2022 grand final, Karpany has picked up from where he left off this year.

The former West Coast and South Adelaide player has been dominant as a halfback and midfielder, winning contested ball and setting up his teammates with elite distribution.

Karpany has five goals and four best player performances in his five appearances so far this season.

7. JARRAD REDDEN

(Southern Eagles)

A star triple premiership player with Woodville-West Torrens, Redden’s arrival at Southern Eagles has made the club a legit contender in 2023.

Redden is a mobile big who consistently dominates in the ruck and can also play up front and provide a strong target in front of goal.

Has 11 goals and four best player nods in seven games so far.

6. NATHAN ALLEN

(Southern Eagles)

Southern Eagles’ captain has been at his best through 2023 after a terrific 2022 campaign.

A strong, big bodied midfielder known for his courage in the contest, Allen is an excellent distributer by hand and leads by example each week.

Has four goals and five best player mentions in his seven games so far.

5. ANGUS POOLE

(Kadina)

Poole has been a contested possession machine since joining Kadina with former Woodville-West Torrens Eagles teammate Jake Von Bertouch at the start of last season.

The dual SANFL premiership player remains one of the best runners in the YPFL and dominates as an inside mid.

Poole can also hit the scoreboard, kicking eight goals to go along with five best player mentions in his six games.

4. JAKE VON BERTOUCH

(Kadina)

Arguably the best centre half-forward in SA country footy, Von Bertouch has starred during his second season for Kadina.

A hard working forward with a strong set of hands and an elite kick for goal, the Woodville-West Torrens 130-gamer has been a nightmare matchup for Yorke Peninsula defenders.

Von Bertouch has booted 31 goals in his seven games this year and tallied four best player mentions.

3. TYLER ANDREWS

(Moonta)

Currently leading the YPFL in goalkicking with 33 majors to his name through seven games, Andrews has again solidified himself as one of the league’s top names.

Andrews plays both in the middle and up front and can dominate the contest in either position.

Almost unstoppable one-on-one, Andrews recently booted nine goals against Wallaroo and also had a seven-goal performance against Paskeville.

2. RYLEY MAITLAND

(Moonta)

The Eastern Eyre FL medallist in 2021, Maitland has been a sensational pick-up for the Demons through 2022 and in 2023 so far.

The fierce onballer always attacks the ball with courage and is one of the best in the competition at getting his arms free to distribute the footy.

Maitland has been named among Moonta’s best in all seven of his appearances this season.

1. MURPHY SHORT

The winner of the last two Yorke Peninsula FL Mail Medals, Short has started the 2023 season in sensational form for CMS Crows.

A skilled midfielder who can dominate in the contest and can also hit the scoreboard on occasion, Short has been named his side’s best in all four of his appearances so far and has kicked two goals.

Has also represented Port Adelaide at SANFL League level this season, playing four games for the Magpies so far.

10. MICHAEL SMITH

(Morphett Vale)

Morphett Vale’s captain remains one of the Emus’ star players in 2023 with a number of dominant displays on the ball.

A big-bodied player who is tough to bring down and uses the ball terrifically, Smith led his side to an unlikely grand final appearance last year and has continued his momentum this season. Has four best player performances in his eight games so far.

9. DAVID KEARSLEY

(Flagstaff Hill)

A champion veteran for Flagstaff Hill, Kearsley has been a star player for the Falcons for years.

A talented onballer who rotates through the backline, Kearsley is hard at the contest and has a tremendous footy IQ.

Has kicked two goals and been named among his side’s best three times so far this season, and will be an important leader for the Falcons come finals.

8. JAIDAN KAPPLER

(Noarlunga)

One of the Adelaide Crows SANFL side’s newest members, Kappler has been dominant for Noarlunga yet again this season.

An exciting player who can play across the backline or down the wing, he often kills opposing teams with pace and decisive ball-use.

Can also hit the scoreboard, with seven goals in seven games so far.

7. TATE COLEMAN

Happy Valley’s star player, Coleman remains one of the best players in the SFL.

Doing most of his damage out of centre, Coleman is a strong and explosive player who can also move up the ground and have an impact on the scoreboard.

Has three best player nods and three goals in seven games so far.

6. REECE MILSOM

(Flagstaff Hill)

Milsom has been impressive for the Falcons so far this year after arriving from South Adelaide.

A talented midfielder who distributes well by hand or foot, Milsom racks up possessions and sets his teammates up with ease.

Has five best player nods and two goals in eight games and was also a standout for the SFL in its interleague matchup with Kangaroo Island.

5. SAM WHITBREAD

Last year’s SFL Mail Medallist, Whitbread has picked up from where he left off for the reigning premier.

A dominant inside player who loves doing the dirty work for his side, Whitbread wins plenty of the contested footy and is a clearance machine.

Has six best player appearances in eight games and five goals.

4. BAILEY HANN

(Noarlunga)

The former North Adelaide and Mount Compass player has been exceptional for Noarlunga through the midfield and remains the standout player for the Shoes so far this year.

A tireless player with clean hands and strong marking ability, Hann has no issues finding his fair share of the footy and damaging opposition with his disposal.

Has eight best player mentions in eight games as well as three goals.

3. MARC BORHOLM

(Reynella)

A dominant big who can play up front and through the ruck, Borholm has been Reynella’s standout player so far in season 2023.

Borholm has improved his production as an all-round asset for the Wineflies after they lost star Cam McGree to Glenelg in the pre-season, damaging opposition with strong aerial ability and tap work and also finishing well in front of goal.

Has eight best player nods in eight games and has tallied 18 majors so far.

2. NATHANIEL PAREDES

Well-known for his performances as captain of St Mary’s in the NT, Paredes has been a sensational pick-up for Andrew Jarman and the Cockledivers in the SFL.

A strong and skilled player who can fill a number of roles around the ground, Paredes is hard at the footy and can distribute or finish in front of goal efficiently off of either side of his body. Has 13 goals and six best player mentions in his seven games so far.

1. SAM JACOBS

Jacobs has been a dominant force for Flagstaff Hill since arriving after a starring Crows career and time with hometown club Ardrossan.

The most skilled big man in local footy, ‘Sauce’ has been a standout as a towering ruck who can find mids with elite tap-work, take big marks and gather as clean as any below his knees.

Has also been a star up front, booting 29 goals in seven games to lead the SFL.

Jacobs has three best player nods and should take out the league’s Mail Medal.

10. JONATHON HAYES

An exceptional leader of Solomontown, Hayes is in the midst of another standout season for the Cats after a strong 2022 campaign.

The strong and talented onballer is relentless in the contest and classy with ball in hand, always making the correct decisions.

Has six best player appearances and three goals in seven games.

9. DARCY PUDDY

(Port)

Puddy has had a fantastic start to the 2023 season, playing a significant role in Port’s finals push so far.

A hard worker who always creates space with ball in hand through the middle, Puddy can hit teammates with pinpoint disposal by foot or with creative handballs.

Has five best player nods and three goals in his eight games so far.

8. RIAN SMOKER

Smoker has been at his best this season as West Whyalla launches a likely grand final push.

One of the most talented players in the WFL, Smoker is an impressive athlete with the ability to win the ball in the contest and hit any teammate by foot or hand.

Lockett is always providing an option on the ball or in the forward 50, taking strong marks and often making the best decisions with ball in hand.

9. ZAK EDWARDS

(Kingscote)

Edwards’ work through the middle this season has been a big factor in the Hounds’ finals push and should ensure the club is a major chance for a grand final appearance in 2023.

A tireless runner who finds plenty of the ball and applies relentless pressure to the opposition, Edwards impacts the contest at a high level and can also hit the scoreboard.

Has four best player nods in six games and also has three goals.

8. NATHAN STOCK

(Western Districts)

A gun defender who can also move up front to play as a target and boot goals, Stock remains one of the Saints’ star players.

Stock booted 31 goals in 15 games for his side last season but has done more defending in 2023, competing well in the air and at ground level to provide security for his side.

Arriving from Uraidla Districts in the pre-season, the former Norwood and Gold Coast player should provide a major boost for Kingscote during this year’s finals series.

A versatile player who can have an impact through the middle or a number of positions around the ground, Ah Chee has elite skills off the deck and is also one of the most athletic players in the competition.

6. BRADLEY CRABB

Despite only playing four of a possible nine games so far this season, Crabb is still one of the standout players in the competition and has produced brilliant displays in 2023.

A dominant defender who can lock down almost any forward and distribute accurately out of the back, Crabb remains one of the most important players in the Western Districts line-up.

The former South Adelaiee gun was dominant last weekend in a thrilling draw with Kingscote.

5. LACHLAN SUMMERS

(Kingscote)

The standout ruckman of the Kangaroo Island FL, Summers has produced a strong season for Kingscote since arriving from Blyth-Snowtown in the North East.

Summers can dominate with consistent tap-work, giving his mids first use of the footy, or provide a strong marking target up the ground to help his side start attacking moves.

4. LLEYTON HEDGES

Currently the leading goalkicker in the KIFL, Hedges has picked up where he left off last year to put together a fantastic 2023 so far.

Hedges booted 43 goals in nine games last season and has kicked 33 in eight appearances this year, often providing a strong target up front with safe hands and a reliable kick for goal.

Looms as a game changer, booting a huge nine majors in last season’s winning grand final to take out best on ground honours.

3. LIAM SAMPSON

A dominant midfielder who runs all day and hits the contest hard, Redden has been a damaging asset for the Hawks and his club’s standout player so far this year.

4. SHANE BALLANTYNE

Ballantyne has had another fantastic season for Southern Flinders so far, dominating in the NAFA and for Northern District in the SA Country Championships.

A strong and athletic half-forward utility who plays a number of roles, uses the ball efficiently and can finish on either side of his body, Ballantyne has no issue taking big contested grabs and booting big goals from any angle.

Has nine majors and nine best player nods in 10 games.

3. AARON FIELKE

The former West Adelaide premiership player has been a force for Crystal Brook since joining from Westminster OS in the pre-season.

An explosive and strong target up front, Fielke has a strong set of hands a damaging boot, is almost impossible to stop one-on-one and has a habit of taking big marks and finishing off in front of the big sticks.

Has 37 goals in seven games to lead the NAFA in goalkicking and also has four best player appearances.

2. ALEX MORGAN

BSR’s superstar yet again this year, Morgan has been at his brilliant best for the Tigers.

A strong, skilled and athletic player who works tirelessly in the contest and across the forwardline, Morgan can either damage opposition with his ability to win big clearances for his side or boot multiple majors.

Has six best player appearances in his nine games and has also kicked 15 goals.

Combe has been a star for hometown club Crystal Brook since returning after a strong career with North Adelaide in the SANFL.

The gun onballer was part of the 2022 SANFL Advertiser Team of the Year and has continued his form this season at local level, hunting the ball in the contest to either set up teammates with precise ball-use or hit the scoreboard himself.

One of the best runners and athletes in the NAFA, Combe has eight best player nods in nine games and has also booted 15 goals so far.

Worsfold’s impact for Loxton North has been immeasurable this season.

A 100-game player for the Panthers, Worsfold is an elite runner and always works hard in the contest, offering pace and a cool head under pressure.

Has tallied eight best player mentions in his eight games and was also a standout during the Riverland FL’s interleague matchup with the Hills Country Division.

9. TRISTAN GEEHMAN

3. SCOTT LEWIS

Woolford hits the contest relentlessly to win the ball in the middle and deal to teammates with precision and oozes class on either side of his body.

While he has only managed six games so far this season, the Renmark star has tallied four goals and four best player performances in those appearances.

9. TYLER CARROLL

(East Roxby)

The former Seaton Rambler has been East Roxby’s standout since joining for season 2023.

Carroll brings an explosive and skilful ability to the Roos’ line-up and battles hard in the contest while also providing run out wide.

8. KALLAN HEAD

(Hornridge)

The former Karoonda player joined Hornridge after the disbandment of the Mallee FL and has not disappointed for his new club.

A consistent player who can fill a variety of needs across the ground, Head works as hard as anyone in the competition and always makes good decisions under pressure.

Has three best player mentions and a goal in his five games for the Magpies.

7. ANTON GERARDIS

(Roxby Districts)

The competition’s top goalkicker so far this season, Gerardis has been at his best for the Miners.

Reliable in one-on-one positions with a strong set of hands, the gun forward is clean in the air or off of the deck and can either create for teammates or finish in front of goal himself.

5. IAN MCBEY

A superstar for Olympic Dam through a number of years, McBey has been one of the competition’s best again this season.

A versatile player who can produce up the ground or in the contest, the Devils veteran boasts elite skills by hand and foot and has dominated almost every week so far this season.

Has nine goals and five best player nods in eight games.

4. ADAM JACKSON

(Roxby Districts)

Joining the Miners in the pre-season after a number of successful years with Pinnaroo and Lameroo in the Mallee FL, Jackson has been one of the standouts in the FNFL this year.

A skilled forward who can play a number of roles around the ground including in midfield, Jackson is efficient by foot and can either hit the scoreboard or create for his teammates with reliable distribution.

Has 11 goals – including a nine-goal showing against East Roxby – and four best player mentions in four games.

3. LEVI KONITZKA

(Port MacDonnell)

Munro has been a superstar across the forwardline and in the middle for Port MacDonnell this season.

The young gun has been a weapon since arriving at the Demons in the pre-season, the smooth moving asset displaying consistent skills and booting a number of big goals for his side.

Has 37 goals and five best player mentions in his 11 games, with a standout 10-goal performance against Glencoe in round 10.

An athletic and gritty player who racks up disposals with ease and uses the ball as well as anyone in the South East.

Has nine best player nods and a goal in 11 games for Penola.

6. LEWIS HENDER

Eats has remained one of the best players in the South East in 2023 after a strong 2022 season.

Has been the top MSEFL side’s best player this season with eight best player appearances in 11 games to go along with 17 goals.

3. CLINTON GALLIO

Following on from a brilliant 2022 season, Willson has produced at a strong level again through 2023.

Naracoorte’s playing-coach is a standout in the middle, boasting elite skills off of either side of his body and using the ball with precision to find teammates.

Willson was selected for the SA Country side to take on WA Country yet again and has tallied four best player performances and three goals in 10 games for his club.

A former Melbourne and Sturt player and the reigning KNTFL Mail Medallist, Taggert has put together another fantastic season for Naracoorte so far.

The strong and athletic forward can play anywhere on the ground and has been a terror for opposition defences, using his ability to take big grabs, kick goals and set-up teammates with elite field kicking.

Taggert was also selected for this year’s SA Country side to take on WA after a standout Country Championships.

Has 31 goals and eight best player mentions in his 11 games for Naracoorte this season.

The reigning Mail Medallist in the Port Lincoln FL, former Norwood youngster Haebich has been a standout on the EP yet again this year.

Dominating for third-placed Tasman through the middle, Haebich’s run and carry as well as composed ball use makes him one of the most dangerous players in the competition.

Has three best player performances through his 10 games and was one of the best association players this season, with four best player nods in his four games.

9. JESSE CHANDLER

A superstar leader for Western United, Chandler has been dominant for his hometown club after a stint with Norwood in the SANFL in 2021.

Brother of star teammate Harlee Chandler, Jesse is a powerful and athletic forward who can also spend time in the middle, his ability to deliver to teammates with accuracy off of either side or take big grabs making him a terror for opposition.

Has 35 goals and eight best player nods in 11 games and also played SA Country Championships.

8. ASERI RAIKIWASA

Playing-coach for Ports again this season, Raikiwasa remains one of the most dominant players on the Eyre Peninsula.

The former Port Adelaide big man has dominated for the Magpies, using his massive frame and elite instincts to quell attacks and also dominate in the contest.

An SA Country Championships player yet again this year, Raikiwasa has led by example through his five games and should be a force to be reckoned with during finals.

7. JOHANN WAGNER

Arriving as playing-coach of Lincoln South this season, Wagner has helped transform the Eagles into a genuine premiership contender.

The former Port Adelaide player can perform as a strong and athletic forward or also play through the middle with the ability to win his own footy and distribute at a high efficiency.

Has 15 goals in his seven games and will be a major contributor come finals.

6. DANIEL MINNEY

(Marble Range)

The talented midfielder has continued his elite performances for Marble Range in the PLFL this season after arriving from Woodville-West Torrens in 2021.

The SA Country Championships player is a strong body who can outmuscle opponents in the contest and up front to either create for teammates with top drawer distribution around the ground or hit the scoreboard himself.

Has five best player nods and six goals in his eight games.

5. ZANE MONTGOMERIE

(Lincoln South)

Joining Wagner’s Lincoln South side from Elliston Districts in the pre-season, Montgomerie has become one of the EP’s best players in 2023.

A star player who can play across the backline or in the middle, Montgomerie has the ability to impact every contest on the ground and in the air to either spoil, take big marks or dispose efficiently to teammates.

The SA Country Championships and state country team member has been among his side’s best four times in eight games and has also managed two goals.

4. COOPER LLEWELYN

The reigning Eastern Eyre FL Mail Medallist, Llewelyn has been at his best again for Ports this season.

The 20-year-old midfielder is a machine in the contest, attacking the footy relentlessly to win key possessions and deal to his teammates with ease.

Also a natural leader on the field, Llewelyn can get his side out of a dangerous situation with composure and the ability to boot goals.

Has 13 majors and three best player performances in eight games and was also an SA Country Championships player.

3. MATT CRETTENDEN

The most prolific goalkicker in the Eyre Peninsula in recent seasons, Crettenden has put together a remarkable year for United Yeelanna in the Great Flinders FL so far.

Also a skilled forward for Sacred Heart OC in the Adelaide Footy League, Crettenden has only made five appearances, but still leads the competition in goalkicking.

A smart forward with damaging leading patterns, strong hands and the ability to finish from anywhere, Crettenden has kicked a huge 52 goals in just five appearances for his side this year.

This includes a 13-goal performance against Eyre United and a 12-goal day against Cummins Kapinnie.

2. HARLEE CHANDLER

(Western United)

Following a strong season for Western United last year, Harlee Chandler has taken his game to another level.

One of the most promising young players in local SA footy, the 20-year-old is versatile enough to play in any line and boasts brilliant aerial ability.

Can also move up the ground and bag goals, with 18 majors to go along with four best player performances in eight games.

Was also a standout in the SA Country Championships and made the state country side which took on WA over the weekend.

Returning to Lock after another top season with Marble Range, former Port Adelaide and Sturt player Kory Beard has taken the Great Flinders FL by storm.

An athletic and versatile player for the Roos, Beard can have an impact through the middle, behind the ball or up front, displaying brilliant skill by either foot or hand and the ability to find teammates when under pressure.

Has six best player nods and eight goals in his seven appearances so far and will be a major contender for the GFFL Mail Medal.

One of the biggest signings in local SA footy this season, Brown has been a consistent contributor for TTG since arriving from the Crows.

A star in defence who is as clean as anyone with ball in hand, Brown can also move up front to provide a strong target forward option.

Has four best player nods and 15 goals in 10 games so far.

9. SAM WUNDKE

(Glenunga)

Arguably the best key defender in the competition this season, Wundke’s form has been a big reason for Glenunga’s success so far in 2023.

A star leader for the Rams, Wundke can shut down almost any forward in division one with strong contested ball work in the air and at ground level while also starting rebound attacks with accurate disposal.

Has six best player mentions through his 13 appearances so far.

8. COOPER GAFFNEY

(Port District)

Coming off of a strong 2022 campaign during which he won best on ground in the div one grand final, Gaffney has been a standout again in 2023.

Gaffney is an excellent distributor off of halfback and can also apply his trade through the middle, fighting hard for possession as a key contributor for Port District.

Has five best player appearances and a goal in 13 games.

7. CRAIG PITT

Prince Alfred OC’s playing-coach has been highly influential for his team again this season, impressively leading it to top spot with finals fast-approaching.

A versatile star, the former Glenelg gun can play anywhere but is most effective through the middle or up front as a smart target forward – a position he was most dominant in during last year’s big dance.

Has kicked seven goals through 13 games so far and should be a key player come finals.

6. NICK FAVRETTO

(Goodwood)

The reigning Keith Sims OAM (division one) Medallist, Favretto has been a force during what has been a challenging year for Goodwood so far.

A bull in the contest, Favretto wins plenty of the ball for the Saints and can either find teammates with accurate disposal or move up the ground to hit the scoreboard.

Has seven best player nods and five goals in 13 games.

5. ALEX CAILOTTO

Sacred Heart OC’s playing-coach in 2023, Cailotto has led from the front for Hearts playing a dominant ruck and forward utility role.

One of the strongest targets in division one, Cailotto can boot bags of goals up front or feed midfielders with elite tap-work.

Has three best player performances and 20 goals through his 12 games so far this year.

4. ABE DAVIS

(Glenunga)

A key addition for the Rams this season, Davis has had a standout year since arriving from Sturt.

Able to play a number of roles around the ground including ruck, midfield and forward, Davis is one of the toughest to bring down in division one and makes strong decisions under pressure.

Has eight best player appearances and 21 goals through his 12 games so far.

3. CHRIS CURRAN

A star off of the backline for PAOC, Curran has been as impactful as ever for his side.

Arriving at the club last season, the former Glenelg captain can beat forwards in the air or at ground level and is the best distributor out of the back in the competition.

Has four best player nods in his 10 appearances so far.

2. SAM GRAY

The former Port Adelaide and Sydney player has been a weapon since arriving at Port District last season and is having another strong campaign after the club’s premiership in 2022.

A versatile player who is able to fill a number of roles for the Magpies, Gray is an excellent user of the footy and can do damage through the middle in the contest or have an impact up front.

Has nine best player mentions and 11 goals in 13 games.

Coming off another strong year for the Old Reds last season, Trengove has been close to his best this year and a major factor in his club’s strong campaign so far.

The star onballer and former Keith Sims OAM Medallist is an elite distributor, runs out games exceptionally well and always providing a reliable option for teammates.

Can also hit the scoreboard with seven goals to go along with eight best player nods in his 13 games so far.

Last year’s division three medallist, former Norwood gun Pitman has played at a high level yet again for the Kookaburras this season.

A ball magnet who is an efficient user and loves getting up the ground to hit the scoreboard for the Kookaburras.

Pitman has 15 majors and eight best player nods in 14 games so far this season.

8. JORDAN O’BRIEN

(Salisbury North)

Salisbury North captain Jordan O’Brien remains a standout inside player in division two.

The Hawks star and former Central District player is an athletic and skilled asset who covers ground as well as anyone in the competition and can find teammates anywhere around the ground with efficient disposal.

Nine best player nods and six goals in 14 games.

7. TOM WAGNER

Arriving at PNU after time with Norwood, Wagner has played a significant part in the Falcons’ strong run this year.

Capable of playing up front or through the midfield, Wagner’s skill and versatility makes him one of the most dangerous players in division two.

6. AARON ANDERSON

The powerful midfielder is one of the hardest to quell in the contest, attacking the footy relentlessly and exploding from congestion to find teammates and create goalscoring opportunities.

5. CAM SHENTON

Extremely skilled by hand and foot, Spence applies consistent tackle pressure in the contest and creates for his teammates effortlessly with ball in hand and has displayed his importance for PNU despite only playing eight games so far.

Can also hit the scoreboard with seven goals and five best player mentions.

3. MITCH GRIGG

(Athelstone)

Signing with his junior club after a starring season for Lobethal, the former Norwood star and Adelaide Crow has been a workhorse for the Raggies.

A tough inside player who covers the ground well and damages opposition with his accurate left boot, Grigg’s skills and leadership have helped to make Athelstone a contender in 2023.

2. HENRY PAPATOLIS

A hardworking and athletic midfielder who is relentless in the contest, Papatolis wins plenty of the ball for the Phantoms and distributes as well as anyone while also hitting the scoreboard consistently.

Has 10 best player appearances and 12 goals through 13 games so far.

The former Gold Coast and Norwood gun has been a star recruit for Golden Grove during another fantastic season for the club.

A strong and athletic player who can impact the game through the middle or play as a dangerous forward, Glenn’s ability to win aerial and ground contests and either deal to teammates or hit the scoreboard makes him an elite player.

Has 27 goals and seven best player nods through 14 games so far.
