Another major sporting competition on the Gold Coast has been cancelled due to the looming Tropical Cyclone Alfred threat with the 2025 Australian WPGA Championship cancelled.

The tournament was meant to kick off on Thursday and run through to Sunday but was officially cancelled on Tuesday morning with a statement released by the PGA of Australia.

The cancellation could prove to have a major long term blow for the city as Gold Coast powerbrokers had hoped this competition could be used as an Olympics audition, with the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club submitted in the 100 day review of Olympic venues.

“Clearly Sanctuary Cove and the Palms and the Pines (courses) have been noted and we’ve added our support,” Gold Coast acting mayor Donna Gates said last week.

The statement released by the PGA of Australia said:

“After monitoring weather forecasts and following dialogue with the Queensland Government, Gold Coast City Council, Mulpha Group, Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club and the Ladies European Tour, we have taken the unprecedented decision to cancel the event ahead of the first days play set to take place on Thursday.

“With the predicted high rainfall, extreme winds and expected flooding, the decision has been made to ensure the safety of players, staff, fans and all stakeholders, which remains the priority.

“Although supremely disappointing, all stakeholders now look ahead to 2026 with the tournament blueprint already in place to ensure we have an exciting Australian WPGA Championship and Gold Coast Festival of Golf.”

The WPGA Championship is one of three elite competitions which were set to take place on the Gold Coast this weekend to be called in off in less than 24 hours.

The Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final, which was meant to run on Saturday and Sunday at Burleigh Heads and feature some of the nation’s top surfers has been postponed to a later date.

“Due to forced measures, and based on official weather models and advice from the Bureau of Meteorology, council and emergency services authorities, we have made this decision in the interest of the safety of all competitors, staff, and spectators,” Surfing Australia said in a statement.

“Safety remains our highest priority. Forecast conditions indicate that it will not be safe to run the event or for competitors and officials to travel. Event officials have been closely monitoring the system in accordance with our risk management protocols and have determined that postponement is the most responsible course of action.”

The Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships were scheduled to be held at North Kirra from March 7 to 9 but was called off by organisers on Monday afternoon.

“The safety of our competitors, officials and staff come first,” Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships carnival committee chair Nigel Ward said.

“Based on latest weather modelling from Queensland Government authorities and the Bureau of Meteorology, we have made the early decision to cancel the event due to be held this weekend, to provide all those participating enough time to prepare.

“Delivering a safe event for everyone is our primary consideration.

“We also needed to think about the safety around travel for our members to and from the event, given people come from all over Queensland to take part.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland is yet to make a decision on the Queensland Youth Championships which are scheduled to be held at Tugun Beach from March 13 to 16, with updates on the event to be provided early next week.

The Suncrop Spirit Cup preseason exhibition game bwetween the Sunshine Coast Lightning and the Queensland Firebirds has also been cancelled with no new date scheduled at this stage.

The game was meant to take place on Firday night at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara.
