Jason Day has finally revealed the real reason why he never signed with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf.
And his surprising explanation is not the one most golf fans would have ever thought.
As a major winner and former world number one, it’s long been expected that Day would cash in on his incredible career achievements and join the rebel circuit for a truckload of dollars.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Day has remained loyal to the PGA Tour, winning the Byron Nelson tournament in 2023 and earning himself a spot on the Australian team for this year’s Paris Olympics.
But with the PGA Tour and LIV reportedly close to kissing and making up, with Rory McIlroy even suggesting Donald Trump could broker a deal after being re-elected as US President, Day has now disclosed the stunning truth behind why he never jumped ship.
He never had to make a decision because they didn’t want him so never made him an offer.
“I didn’t knock it back,” Day told this masthead.
“What happened was, it was a business move to just go in and explore the potential of what would happen or what the price would be.
“And my agent, who has represented a lot of guys over there, said ‘hey, I’m just going to go out just to see what happens’.
“And I said ‘no worries, I’m happy with where I’m at, but it’s always nice to know.‘
“And they said, ‘we love Jason, but he’s too injured, he just gets too many injuries.‘”
Although he may have missed out on a massive payday, Day has still done all right for himself on the PGA Tour, earning more than $100 million in prize money, which doesn’t include what he’s also been paid in appearance fees and bonuses from his personal sponsors.
After struggling for years with back injuries, Day’s got his health in order and his game is blossoming again, so he says has no regrets whatsoever that LIV didn’t make him an offer.
‘I don’t blame them whatsoever for making that business decision,” he said.
“I’m so thankful and so happy that I stayed on the PGA Tour. I just feel that the tour was a perfect spot for me.”
The headline attraction at the upcoming Australian PGA championship at Royal Queensland from Nov 21-24, Day remains close friends with many of the players who defected to LIV.
The 36-year-old said he has no problem with any of them for leaving the PGA Tour but admits he is looking forward to the day when the tours are united.
“I’m happy that guys went over there as well,” Day said. “I’m not disappointed or angry that guys left, I totally understand what they we’re going through.
“I’m hoping we join back together because there’s definitely a lot of players on the LIV tour that we miss on the PGA tour.
“I miss some of the guys out there. Some of my mates, like Cam Smith and Leish (Marc Leishman) and Herbie (Lucas Herbert) and Matt Jones, those guys especially, and obviously some of the other guys too that I haven’t seen for a long time.
“LIV’s a tough one. I’ve always played very central with LIV and just never really got in the politics of it all. I just wish there wasn’t so much head banging at the start and we just sat down.”
