It’s a special list compiled by Waratahs experts identifying youngsters with both talent and potential and with the skills to potentially earn them a spot in their first Tahs squad - and a shot at beating their Queensland Reds opposites next month.

A list of 125 young guns who will be put through their paces in a series of games after being talent spotted at club matches, schools events and the NSW state rugby championships mid year.

For a select number, it could be the start of a journey which potentially could see them represent their state, Academy and country in rugby.

The Next Gen Cup at Camden this weekend, featuring the top 14 and 15 year old rugby union players in the state from city and regional areas, will help select the squad to take on the Reds in an annual two-match battle in October.

The event helps unearth young talent with names like Isaiah Sheck and Justice Taumoepeau playing in both the U14 and U15 age group in recent times.

“It’s important. I look at the U16s this year and less than five of the 36 didn’t play at this tournament last year,’’ said Waratahs head of pathways Matt Evrard

“This put them on the road.. The 14 to 15s age is where our identification starts..

“We have them on a list and continually watch them.’’

Waratahs officials have broken down their list of talent into one U14s team and four U15s sides.

The four under 15 teams have been named after famous rugby players from NSW - Team Baxter, Team Ella, Team Waugh and Team Gavin but are not based on clubs, school or regions.

Instead Waratahs Academy staff have chosen them to ensure the best mix of talent in each team, and allow for the best to compete against the best.
