Former Adelaide Crows defender turned Brisbane Lion Tom Doedee has taken a jab at some South Australian icons, while saying the move to Queensland has been a refreshing change.
In an interview with Channel 10 news, Doedee, who is originally from Victoria, said he never bought into the parochialism of South Australians during his time with the Crows.
“When I was in South Australia, because I’m born and bred Victorian, I didn’t ever subscribe to those things. The pie floaters and that, they just made no sense to me,” he said.
“As a Victorian … you want to remain a Victorian because there’s something about being a Victorian.
“So I sort of never really got completely into that South Australian culture. Even FruChocs, I didn’t quite enjoy, which South Australians won’t like to hear me saying that.
“There’s something about South Australians, they just love their South Australian things. If you’re a Victorian coming from afar, things like Farmers Union all that sort of stuff, I just didn’t buy into it.”
Doedee, who is expected to return to the field for Brisbane within a month after recovering from an ACL injury, said he had enjoyed his move up to Queensland.
“It’s almost refreshing to come up here and not have them (parochial South Australians) there and not have people hammering you,” he said.
“People like XXXX beer up here, but it’s not like XXXX is what you have to drink, whereas South Australians will do that with Coopers.”
Doedee continued to say the change of culture in Queensland had been “refreshing”.
He said he had enjoyed the sun and exercise culture and new ways of dealing with life’s stresses.
Talking on FIVEaa on Thursday morning, Doedee said his comments had been taken out of context.
“The question was specifically whether I missed things like FruChocs and pie floaters,” he said.
“Obviously I didn’t quite enjoy those things and I’ve never had a pie floater, so I couldn’t really comment on that.
“If the question was around red wine, beaches or some of the cinemas or even the Crowies and their fans, I would’ve talked about how much I missed it and I loved it.
“Instead they decided to ask about FruChocs, pie floaters and Coopers, none of which I enjoy.
“Beer in general is not really for me and South Australian beer... it’s not because it’s from South Australia, more just because it’s beer to be honest.
“I do apologise if it was taken out of context. It was meant to be a little bit tongue in cheek and a bit of fun, but unfortunately it was framed a different way and I copped the brunt of it for it.”
