The Socceroos 2022 World Cup campaign got underway against France on Wednesday in scenes nobody expected to see.

Inside the opening 10 minutes the Socceroos launched into attack with Harry Souttar delivering a perfect ball from within the Socceroos’ half.

The ball landed at the feet of Mathew Leckie who with a perfect first touch danced his way around French defender Lucas Hernandez and crossed the ball into the box.

Waiting at the back, all on his own, was winger Craig Goodwin who slammed the ball over the outstretched hands of French keeper Hugo Lloris and into the back of the net.

“Oh my god!” Socceroos legend Harry Kewell said on commentary.

France were expected to prove far too strong for the Socceroos on Wednesday but the Aussies stunned them with the opener, leaving fans watching on in raptures.

The goal is the first in open play for the Socceroos at a World Cup since Tim Cahill’s otherworldly volley against Netherlands during the 2014 campaign ... 3081 days ago.

France hit back through Adrien Rabiot and Olivier Giroud as the reigning World Cup champions flexed their muscles.

A defensive lapse from the Socceroos left the door wide open for the men in blue to pounce and hand them the 2-1 lead.

As the opening half drew to a close the Socceroos went within a whisker of levelling it back up with a chance from nothing.

The French defenders were left wide open as the cross found an unattended Jackson Irvine who rose up and sent a header back across goal, unfortunately the ball clipped the outside of the post and went out.
